John Poole

Obituary of John Stephen Poole

November 26, 1939 – Winnipeg, Manitoba

December 25, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

John Poole, beloved husband of Diane Poole, passed away on December 25, 2021, at the age of 82 years.

Generous, fun-loving, mischievous, known as “iron man” to his teammates, John was a lifelong athlete and lover of friendly competition, a hard-working small business owner, a community-minded coach and volunteer, an adopter of strays, a skilled bridge player, an avid golfer, rugby, hockey and tennis player, a pesky brother, a loving husband, a loyal friend, a strict father and a devoted grandfather.

John, no stranger to escapades and antics growing up in Vancouver, moved with his young family to Calgary in 1971.  John spent many happy times at the family cabin in Point Roberts, in the Glencoe pub, and drinking beer in a Team Elbow hockey dressing room. John remained in touch with many of his boyhood friends and loved to share a laugh with his tennis and golf cronies. Friendship and companionship were of utmost importance.

John is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Diane, children Lisa, John, Krista (Mark Schiefler), grandchildren Thomas, Patrick and Josephine Mills, Sophia and Eva Schiefler, sister Mary Lou (Manfred Bienefeld), nephew Andrew, niece Monica (Vava Kolinski) and great-nephews Clyde Bienefeld, Owen and Malcolm Kolinski.

John was well-loved and will be missed.

John lived with vascular dementia for the last several years of his life.  With appreciation to Mary Ann Clearwaters and the wonderful staff at Mount Royal Care Home and special thanks to Patrice Chan for her excellent care and companionship.

A private family service has been held.  There will be a Celebration of Life when pandemic restrictions allow.  Condolences and memories may be shared on John’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.  In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Calgary, www.alzheimercalgary.ca.

In living memory of John Poole, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area.
