Obituary of Sadie Frances Wheeler

October 19, 1943 – Corner Brook, Newfoundland

January 13, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Sadie Frances Wheeler adored daughter, sister, partner, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital with her family at her side on Thursday, January 13, 2022, at the age of 78 years. She has now been reunited with her soul mate and love of her life in heaven, Ernie.

Sadie was born in Corner Brook Newfoundland on October 19, 1943, to her parents whom she loved so deeply, Henry and Florence Green; she was one of nine children.

In her early life, Sadie worked various jobs including, housekeeping, volunteer nursing, and as a waitress, but her most significant and rewarding role was as a caregiver. She was a woman who lived through many great adversities and always came out stronger. She would chop her own families wood to heat their home, wash and hang clothes by hand in the cold temperatures down home.

She spent most of her life raising children. Sadie loved children more than anything. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her entire world.

Sadie was a vibrant, feisty, stubborn, and beautiful soul who touched the lives of so many, including Ernie’s family and his children, her neighbors and friends in Sunnyside, the special little girl who lived next door, Olivia, the staff at Kensington Safeway, and “her girls” at Vendome. Susie, Frank, Pam, Ken, and all the regulars from the Lido Café, and all her family and friends back home in Newfoundland. Everywhere Sadie went she made friends, and everyone thought of her as the neighborhood Mom.

Sadie had a passion for singing, playing guitar, cards, Backgammon and Yahtzee, reading, making puzzles, riding her bicycle, mastering video games on every system imaginable and playing BINGO. She enjoyed painting birdhouses and indulging in a variety of creative arts and crafts as a pastime. It made her so happy to gift her creations to friends, family, and members of the community. Sadie was the most thoughtful, giving, and generous person who would help anyone if she was in the position to do so.

She will be most remembered for her strength, funny sense of humor and the unconditional love she gave each person in her life.

Sadie is survived by her two daughters Geraldine and Sherrie (Lynn), her son Henry (Alta) as well as Danny MacKay and Dan Brauer whom Sadie loved as if they were her own; four grandchildren Dawn (Bryce), Shayla (Nathan), Colin and Howie; six great-grandchildren Liam (Kathryn), Connor, Piper, Teal, Nikita and Gregory; brothers Ronald (Hazel), Junior, Wayne (Joan), her sister and best friend Cynthia, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Sadie was predeceased by her loving partner Ernie, daughter Carrie, grandson Ryan, sisters Jacqueline and Sylvia, and brothers Winston and Derrick.
