Obituary of Patricia Mae Jewell

JEWELL, Patricia Mae

August 1, 1942 - January 31, 2022

Pat Jewell, daughter of James and May Colvin, went to be with her Lord on Monday, January 31, 2022 at the age of 79. She was a beloved wife, sister, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-aunt, as well as friend and teacher to many and will be deeply missed.

A native Calgarian and immensely proud of her Scottish heritage, Pat grew up in a musical household. She was a talented yet humble pianist and accompanist with a gift for music who loved creating shared musical opportunities for others, which she did through teaching, accompanying, and performing. Her passion for others to know the love of music led her to continually encourage anyone of any age to train and develop their musical talent. After graduating from the Eastman School of Music, she taught for two years with the Calgary Board of Education before joining the University of Calgary as an Associate Professor of Music, where she worked for more than 35 years in both the Music and Education Departments teaching piano, musicianship, and early childhood music education. Pat traveled to Hungary to study, train, and research firsthand the Kodaly method of music instruction and enjoyed traveling to other countries (especially Scotland) whenever the occasion arose to visit a friend or perform with a choir.  She was actively involved throughout her lifetime in many musical communities around Calgary, including the Registered Music Teachers Association, Mount Royal Conservatory (including accompanist to the Youth Choir and Kantorei), the Savridi Singers and other musical groups, as well as playing piano for church services almost every week. Her organ skills were often heard at many local churches for weddings and other occasions. Pat was equally as likely to be helping coordinate the food for and organize an event as she was to be performing in it. She loved bringing people of all ages hope, joy, and cheer through music; for years she faithfully directed and played for sing-alongs at the Trinity Lodge and conducted hymn sings at various senior centers and care facilities, even while experiencing the beginning stages of her illness.

Those who know her remember how quick she was to help anyone in need, always giving generously of her time and resources. She enjoyed her tea the Scottish way (with lots of milk, and it could only be Red Rose!) and her fun-loving, upbeat nature stayed with her throughout her life; she was always ready to laugh. Her great love for God and faithfulness to live out the grace and mercy of Christ was a testament to many. From helping collect and bring food to those without through the Mustard Seed ministry, to giving rides, providing childcare or meals when friends were experiencing hardships, she could always be found making others more comfortable. Throughout her long struggle with Alzheimer’s, she remained her gracious, generous self. As her family, while we miss her greatly, we rejoice that she is free of the ravages of her disease, and now able to enjoy the fullness of being in the glorious presence of her creator and Savior.

Pat is survived by her husband, Robert; her brothers, Ron (wife Sharon) and Ken (wife Wendy) Colvin; her children, Jennifer Cheng (husband Shi Jen), Joanna Jewell, and Matthew Jewell; and grandchildren, Vivian, Timothy (wife Stephany), and Jonathan.

A service to commemorate and celebrate Pat's life with reception to follow will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) on Sunday, February 20, 2022 at 2:30 p.m. All who wish to are wholeheartedly invited to participate either in-person or live online (see below), and the uploading of memories, photos, or sentiments is greatly appreciated.

The family would especially like to express our deepest gratitude to her many loving caregivers and the medical and nursing staff of the 4th floor, Carewest Garrison Green for their excellent care and compassion for Pat these last many years - we will always remember your kindness.

While Pat certainly loved flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Calgary, the Alzheimer's Association or the Kodaly Music Society of Canada would be a welcome remembrance.

In living memory of Patricia Jewell, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
