The genesis of my treasured connection with Pat began when her grandparents and mine immigrated from Scotland to settle in NW Calgary. Later, our parents became close friends bringing Pat and me into this intergenerational circle, with its abiding Scottish roots that shaped both of our characters.
Being with Pat was one of the best parts of my growing up. We mothered our baby dolls, styled each other’s hair, had tea parties with crustless sandwiches and limitless sweets, played jacks and Monopoly, celebrated at family birthdays and Christmas parties, performed at Burns Night dinners … years later I was one of Pat’s bridesmaids. Pat, capable, helpful, humble and kind, was my role model.
Memories of my last two visits with Pat are alive in my heart. In 2010, Dorothea Johanson, one of Pat’s long-time musical colleagues and I enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea at Pat’s home, reminiscent of so many shared cups of tea over decades.
My last visit to Pat in 2012 was with her much loved and loving friends, Ruth Mossop and Elaine Sargous. Ruth invited Pat to the piano where Pat played song after song for us. We SANG! I hold onto that joyful time, and all the years of our friendship, with a grateful heart.
Pat, your smile, kindness, humour, God-given musical talent, generosity and goodness blessed my life.
My sincere condolences to Pat's family.
