Obituary of Derek Malcolm Mitchell

Derek Mitchell of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at the age of 88 years.

Born and raised in England, Derek worked for the Nestle Company for 24 years. He took a two-year break for National Service. He served in his Majesty’s Royal Army Service Corps., spending one-year in Aldershot, followed by a year in Singapore. Taking the plunge, Derek and his family immigrated to Canada in 1973; the first year was in Toronto, and then the family moved to the much smaller and quieter area of Kitchener-Waterloo. For the next seventeen years, Derek was employed by the Bay, before leaving due to “restructuring”. After coming out west in 1992 for a three-month holiday, and to spend time with his daughters, Audrey and Diane, he decided that Calgary would be a very good place to live. With that in mind, and having toured all around the city, Derek eventually chose Dorchester Square to reside. After two years of a life of leisure, he decided to join the Dorchester staff.  A number of years later, his rented apartment came on the market for sale and Derek decided to purchase it in September of 1999. Following numerous other part time employment positions, Derek joined Shell Canada as a permanent part-time employee. In April of 2021, Derek sold the apartment and moved to Trinity Retirement Lodge.

Derek was an accomplished ballroom dancer, the numerous medals and certificates showed for his endeavors. He also liked live theatre performances, fine dining, great wine, and spending time with family and friends.

Derek is survived by his two daughters, Diane Mitchell and Audrey Jansson; grandson Derek Mitchell; and great-grandchildren, Mason Mitchell and Taylor Mitchell.  Derek is also survived by his sister Marjorie Petett; nieces, Kathleen Day and Sandra Petett, and his nephew Rodney Hammond. He was predeceased by his sister Doreen Hammond, and his nephew Barry Hammond.
