Obituary of Miles (Greg) Gregory Tompkins, PEng

August 8, 1948 - Halifax, Nova Scotia

February 3, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Greg Tompkins of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer on his own terms on Thursday, February 3, 2022, at the age of 73 years.

Born in Halifax, NS on August 8, 1948. He graduated from St. FX University and TUNS, with his Engineering degree and then completed his MBA at the University of Calgary. He had a long career in the oil industry working at Imperial Oil, TransCanada Pipeline, and Suncor throughout the years. Anyone who knew him, knew that he was a car guy through and through. There were many hours spent in the garage. He was a voracious reader and enjoyed a good game of crib. In recent years, Dad really enjoyed his time in Arizona away from the Calgary winters.  Dad was no nonsense direct man and you always knew what he was thinking, not one to hold back his opinion!

Greg accomplished many things throughout his life and was particularly proud of his children and grandchildren. Greg is survived by his children, Patrick (Calgary, AB), Christine and Troy DesBarres (Halifax, NS) and Andrew and Emilie (Calgary, AB); and seven grandchildren, Daniel, Sophie, Charlotte, Thomas, James, Emmett, and Reid. He is also survived by his sisters, Patricia (Harvey) Haakonson, (Victoria, BC), and Stephanie Tompkins (Moncton, NB), Kathy (Nino) Spampinato (Palmetto, FL) and Melanie Godfrey (Victoria, BC); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Greg was predeceased by his mother Angela and his father Dr. Greg Tompkins.

A private family memorial will be held on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 and a Celebration of Greg’s Life will be held at a later date. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.

Thank you very much to the staff at Rockyview General Hospital (Unit 47) for the care Dad received during his last weeks.

Should you wish, donations can be made in his name to the Canadian Cancer Society or Junior Achievement.

Signing off as Dad would, “That’s all I know”
