Obituary of David Edwin Middlestead

June 29, 1955 – Winnipeg, Manitoba

February 6, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

David Middlestead, beloved husband of Dasha Middlestead (nee Dlouhy), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, February 6, 2022 at the age of 66 years.

Dave was born in Winnipeg, MB, on June 29, 1955, graduated from the John Taylor Collegiate in 1974 where he met his band mates and formed a band (The Backwoods, and Strange Brew). Dave married his high school sweetheart Cheryl and they would go on to have two daughters while he advanced his career with Scotiabank, relocating to Penticton and Kelowna BC, Dauphin and Brandon MB eventually settling in Calgary Alberta in 1990. 

Dave accomplished much through his life and was particularly proud of a long successful career with Scotiabank, retiring in 2014 after 36 years.

Dave met and fell in love with Dasha in 2016 and married in 2018.  They shared a love of travel and adventure, and found a way to combine their passions for art and woodworking. 

One of Dave’s favourite songs was “A good man” by Emerson Drive: 

I wanna be the one

When all is said and done

Who lived a good life, loved a good wife

And always helped someone in trouble

On the day they lay me down

I want everyone to gather 'round

And say, 'He was a father, brother, neighbor and a friend

He was a good man'

He will be most remembered for his infectious smile, sense of humour, and charm. 

Besides his loving wife and her two children, Blanka Holmes (Todd Cannings) and Milo Dlouhy (Emily McGuigan), Dave is survived by his two daughters, Danica DeSouza (Deepak Soni) and Carling Middlestead (Lindsay Mallory); and four grandchildren, Selena, Andrew, Gabriel, and Dominic DeSouza. Dave was dearly loved by Dasha’s grandchildren, Cale, Megan, Ember, Demitra, Milo; and great-grandchildren, Oliver, Piper, and Leo. 

Dave is also survived by his mother Barbara Middlestead; two brothers, Jordan Middlestead (Donna Middlestead) and Jeff Middlestead (Sandy Dupley); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his father Herbert Middlestead.

Memorial Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Sunday, February 13th, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the funeral home. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mr. Middlestead’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service.
