Obituary of Darlene Warren

April 17, 1959 – Rexton, New Brunswick

February 7, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Darlene Charlotte Warren, beloved wife of Brian Keay, of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 7, 2022 at the age of 62 years after being diagnosed with cancer in September 2021.

Darlene was born in Rexton, NB, on April 17, 1959.  She graduated from Mount Allison University with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in History and then a Masters of Library Science from Dalhousie University.

After working a brief time at the Biological Station Library (Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans Canada) in St. Andrews, NB, she moved to Calgary in 1988 and took up a position at the University of Calgary in Libraries and Cultural Resources as an Associate University Librarian for over 25+ years.

Darlene accomplished much through her life and was particularly proud of her work in the development of the Information Commons within Libraries and Cultural Resources along with her leadership roles at the Gallagher Library, Health Sciences Library and Military Museums.

After retirement, she took up weight lifting and was elated with her World Record (Squat) and three Canadian records (deadlift, bench press and total points) for her age category (60-64) and weight class (67.5kg) in 100% RAW Powerlifting competitions.

In addition to weight lifting, Darlene loved cooking, gardening, indigenous art, photography, cruising the world with her best friend Brian and the odd glass of bubbly.

Darlene was a vibrant force.  She did everything with enthusiasm, and an infectious smile both at work and at home.

Darlene is survived by her eight siblings Debbie, Daryl (Carolin), Danny (Kathy), Davene (Aline), Dora, Dolly (Bill), Darren (Vicki) and Dana; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as her lifelong friends Val and Connie.

Darlene was predeceased by father Graham, mother Ruth, sister Mary, brother-in-law Ken and nephew Sterling.
