Obituary of Bruce MacLaren

August 8, 1922 – Brudenell, Prince Edward Island

February 8, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Bruce MacLaren passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at the age of 99 years.

Bruce was born and raised on a farm in Brudenell, PEI, on August 8, 1922. The eldest of five children, he learnt the value of a dollar and what responsibility meant. Family and fun were very important to Bruce, as seen by the many pranks he was often the instigator behind. In 1947, Bruce moved out west to “find his fortune” and he did in the form of his beloved wife Betty. They shared 72 beautiful years together, and always made time to celebrate each anniversary in a special way. Together they enjoyed camping, gardening, building dog houses and browsing garage sales. Bruce had a natural ability for buying and selling almost anything. He began his career by working and then modelling for the Hudson’s Bay Company for 25 dedicated years before forming his own business as an entrepreneur. Owning his own business allowed Bruce to further evolve into the fun loving, energetic person we all came to know and love. Despite running his own business and growing his family, Bruce always had a willingness to help others wherever help was needed, this led him to his ultimate calling of volunteering. He was an active volunteer within the community and enjoyed helping at the food bank. Bruce joined the Freemasons in 1967 and became an active member of the Shriners in 1974, he worked his way up to potentate. He was the commander of Tin Lizzies Corp, a member of Eastern Star, along with many other clubs and organizations.

Bruce is survived by his two daughters Heather (John) Green, and Christine (Reid) Huzzey; and three grandchildren, Sandra Green (Courtland), Helen Huzzey (Matt), and Martin Huzzey. Bruce was predeceased by his wife Betty, parents, Ira and Mary MacLaren; two brothers, Blair MacLaren, and Ken MacLaren; two sisters Jennie Farquharson and Phyllis Christenson, and grandson Norman Bruce Green.
