Obituary of Jerry Hutzal

October 14, 1949 – Athabasca, Alberta
February 12, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Gerald (Jerry) Hutzal, beloved husband of Karen Zelensky and father of Peter Hutzal, of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on Saturday, February 12, 2022, at the age of 72 years.

Jerry was born in Athabasca, Alberta on October 14, 1949, and lived in Boyle, Drayton Valley and Edmonton, AB, before settling in Calgary.  Jerry earned a Diploma of Technology with Honours in Mechanical Engineering in 1979 and, as a P.Eng (Licensee), provided operational management and engineering services to the energy industry for over 40 years for Macdonald Engineering and Associates, Dynatech Petroleum Consultants, Golden Eagle, North Canadian Oils, Harbour Petroleum and Kinwest Energy Inc. Jerry enjoyed volunteering for the Calgary Stampede, ASET and APEGA and coaching with Calgary West Little League Baseball and Trails West Hockey. A person of deep faith, he volunteered often at his Catholic church. Jerry loved flying, receiving his private pilot’s licence in 1980 and enjoyed golfing at the Pinebrook Golf and Country Club, skiing in Kimberley, B.C. and especially cheering for his son in his many sports.

Jerry married Karen Zelensky on August 14, 1993, and on January 21, 1998, they welcomed the arrival of their son, Peter Hutzal.

Besides his loving wife and son, Jerry is survived by his brothers Ed Hutzal (Iona) of Drayton Valley, Ron Hutzal (Delores) of Calgary and his sister, Janet Dmytruk (Rusty) of Edmonton, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Jerry was predeceased by his mother, Mildred Hutzal, his father, Joseph Hutzal, his great niece, Marina McQuaig and his father-in-law, Peter Zelensky.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial), 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, Alberta on Monday, February 21, 2022, at 2:30PM.  Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.  Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed here.
