Obituary of Lewis Herbert Sutherland

February 18, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Lewis Sutherland, beloved husband of Marjorie Sutherland (nee Walker), announce his sudden passing on Friday, February 18, 2022, at the Peter Lougheed Hospital with his loved ones by his side. He was 81 years old.

Born in Nova Scotia, he was the son of Herbert and Anne Sutherland. Lewis began his career in building materials with Macmillan Bloedel in Dartmouth where he held a position as foreman for 22 years. In 1979, he moved west with his family to Calgary, Alberta where he accepted a position with Canfor Ltd which he held until his retirement in 2011.

Married at the age of 19, Lewis remained a loyal and caring husband to his wife Marjorie for 61 years. Moving his family to western Canada in the 70’s was the highlight of his life. Since he was a young man, he always dreamed of moving out west and very proud when he was able to make that happen.  Lew was very interested in genealogy and in 2010 he made a trip to Scotland, visiting the country of his grandfathers.

He was a passionate tennis fan and automobile enthusiast, but most important in his life was his large family of a son, three daughters, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Lew was a genuine, loving man and will be missed by everyone who had the fortune to call him father, brother, or friend.

Lewis is survived by his wife Marjorie, son Daniel (Anne) Sutherland; daughters, Carol (Russell) Mobbs, Catherine (Ross) Andreas, Sheri Friesen, and partner Michael Wagner; Grandchildren, Chelsea (William) Woodhead, Lauren (Brad) Robinson, Sean Bechamp, Glenn, Matthew, and Myles Friesen; great-grandchildren Olivia, Emily, and Charlotte Woodhead, Lily and Maria Friesen, Willow and Kai Robinson. He is also survived by his sister Leona Claes of Dartmouth.

Lewis was predeceased by his parents, brothers, Harold, Gerald, Eric, Everett, James, and sister Jean.
