Edith Ruck

Obituary of Edith Julia Ruck

April 30, 1927 - Eston, Saskatchewan
February 21, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Edith Ruck (nee Cardiff), beloved mother of Tannis, Barbara (Gary), and Meghan (Dennis), passed away on Monday, February 21, 2022, at the age of 94 years. She cherished her four grandchildren; Lynden, Liam, Hayley, and Jenna, and they adored her. Edith was predeceased by the love of her life and her husband of 64 years, William (Bill) Ruck. In his words, “she was a fine lady.”

Edith was born on the prairie in Eston, SK, spending her childhood on a wheat farm. While completing her education degree at the University of Alberta, she spent summers working at Chateau Lake Louise. There, Edith fell in love with the mountains, spurring a move to Rossland, BC, to teach school. This is where she met Bill. Together, they discovered skiing, married, and had their first daughter Tannis before reuniting with the prairies in Medicine Hat, AB, where Barbara and Meghan were added to the family. After the family settled in Calgary, Edith found ways to marry her many careers and passions, including earning a second degree from the University of Calgary, working as a travel agent, and becoming an avid reader, swimmer, lifeguard, and instructor. Edith’s last years were spent at Staywell Manor where she enjoyed many walks along the river and dog park visits, always with a cappuccino or ice cream in hand. We are grateful for the kind and caring support that she received from the staff at Staywell Manor.

At all times, Edith was the most amazing mother. She was a great role model in independence, teaching us not only to cook, sew, and create in the garden but encouraging us to learn sports, play music, and to value our education and careers. Most importantly, she instilled in us the conviction and support to pursue anything that we wanted to be.

Edith was passionate about art and was an accomplished painter. She saw the beauty in nature and loved to explore the mountains and countryside, hiking and skiing with family and friends. Her love of art went hand in hand with her love for colour, especially pink, and especially in the form of cashmere.

A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here. In lieu of flowers and if you wish, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Leighton Art Centre at https://leightoncentre.org/join-us/donate/

In living memory of Edith Ruck, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB T2E 2V6, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
