Obituary of Andrew Laine

February 24, 1947 – Kirkburton, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England

February 26, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Andrew Laine, beloved husband of Suzanne Laine (nee Ashley), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at the age of 75 years.

Andrew was born in Kirkburton, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England on February 24, 1947. He graduated from Worthing Polytech Institute, where he received his certification as an Electric Motor Winder and completed his apprenticeship under his brother Leslie Maurice Laine. Andrew then served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the North England Mission from 1970 to 1971. Andrew immigrated to Canada with his son James in 1976, joining his brother Leonard Laine in Williams Lake, BC, eventually moving to Calgary. Andrew married Sue in Calgary in 1980, adopting her daughter, Lori.

He was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and spent many years giving service to anyone in need who crossed his path.  He truly believed that when we are in the service of our fellow men, we are in the service of our God.  He held many callings within the Church and had a deep love for the Saviour.  He was a High Priest and worked as the Executive Secretary for six different Bishops.

Andrew’s favourite scriptures were John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”, and Moses 1:39, “For behold, this is my work and my glory – to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.” His love of the Scriptures gave him the impetus to write three commentaries on Revelations, Ezekiel and Isaiah.

Andrew’s most memorable vacation was when he returned to England to celebrate his mom’s 100th birthday, spending time with his family there, and showing Sue and James all the places he knew in his youth. A later trip to Jerusalem was a life-long dream fulfilled.

Besides his loving wife Sue, Andrew is survived by his son James, of Calgary, AB, his daughter Lori (James), and his grandchildren Rebecca and Rachel, of Edmonton, AB.

Andrew is also survived by his brothers Leonard Laine in Williams Lake, BC, David Laine in England; his sister Sylvia Deeley in England, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends. Andrew was predeceased by his parents, Leslie Harold and Lillian Laine; and his brother Leslie Maurice Laine.

Andrew struggled with Parkinson Disease for more than 22 years, before finally losing the battle.
