Obituary of Lorna Victoria Buie
BUIE, Lorna Victoria
1938 - Vancouver, British Columbia
2022 - Calgary, Alberta
With profound sadness and heavy hearts, the family of Lorna Buie (née Steele) announce her passing at the Peter Lougheed Centre on Thursday March 24, 2022 at the age of 83 years. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend of many, she will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed. She passed away peacefully with her devoted husband of 60 years, Don, by her side. She leaves behind her three children; Steve (Joan), Ken (Lisa) and Cathy (Mark), as well as her brother Rick (Edith) and her three grandchildren; Ashley (Dan), Chloe (Matt) and Kyle (Steffi). Lorna also leaves behind her seven great-grandchildren; Carter, Alba, Emma, Noah, Max, Rachel and Zoey, who filled her with pride, incredible joy and contagious laughter. Lorna was predeceased by her parents, Richard and Pearl Steele.
Born and raised in Vancouver, BC, Lorna graduated with a teaching certificate and started teaching elementary grades. Lorna and Don moved to Calgary where she set about raising their young children and eventually returning to teaching.
Lorna proudly dedicated her career to educating young minds, being recognized with awards of excellence teaching kindergarten. Each year she made memory books with her students which were always a hit with their families. Wherever Lorna went, she would bump into people she knew, including former students, who remembered their time in her class with fondness and warmth.
Her devotion to children extended into retirement when she began volunteering at the South Health Campus in the NICU as a baby cuddler. Lorna's days volunteering in the NICU were very dear to her heart, where she looked forward to cuddling her preemies and giving the families a much-needed break from the chaos of the NICU.
Never one to take it easy, Lorna returned to her love of sewing in retirement, when quilting became her passion, continuing her love of education by teaching quilting classes. She lovingly poured herself into each of her creations, showering her great-grandchildren with memory blankets and pillowcases that will be cherished for a lifetime. She was a dedicated grandmother who provided her grandchildren with wonderful memories of summers at "the farm", the Annual Buie Stampede Breakfast, and delightful memories of trips to the Calgary Zoo, seeing Dinny the dinosaur. She was an incredible hostess and adored entertaining. Her family loved her homemade goodies, making countless waffles and pumpkin pies with whipped cream that were devoured within seconds of being plated.
Lorna will always be remembered for her kind and genuine demeanour, tenacity, and sharp sense of humour that anyone could appreciate. She enjoyed travelling, sharing her most favorite trip to Sweden with her husband Don. Lorna delighted in bringing home Swedish Tulip bulbs for the whole family to grow and enjoy. She led a loving, vibrant, fulfilling life and will be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to know her. We take solace in knowing she will live on in our hearts and memories.
