Colin McIvor

Obituary of Colin Stuart McIvor

February 13, 1984 – Calgary, Alberta

April 1, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Colin McIvor of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, April 1, 2022, at the age of 38 years. Despite his determined spirit, Colin’s frail body could no longer sustain his fight with Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy, and he passed away with his parents by his side.

Although Colin endured many hospital admissions, surgeries, and medical procedures in his short life, he never complained. Fiercely independent his entire life, he adapted to the countless changes his body incurred but refused to let it limit his enjoyment of life. He was truly an inspiration to all who knew him. Colin was passionate about music. He had a fine ear, enjoying all genres from classical to heavy metal. He learned to play drums, becoming part of a band, and taught himself to play piano, composing short musical remixes and songs. When he was young, he successfully auditioned for the Calgary Boys Choir where he performed for three years. Music remained, to the end, a comfort and distraction for him.

Colin pushed past his physical limits, learning to swim, ski, skate, wrestle, and he enjoyed hiking with family and friends. He was fearless. To the astonishment of his many physicians, he realized his dream of playing hockey. He was proud of his hockey medals; his parents took pride in his sheer tenacity and the extreme effort he exerted to simply play the game. He used that same determination and enthusiasm in every endeavor.

Colin’s favorite pastime involved being surrounded by family or friends, preferably while in front of the fireplace or any other warm location, sipping on a raspberry ale, discussing world affairs, politics, or the state of his beloved Flames. He loved his vacations at Lake Shuswap, Camp Chief Hector, Victoria, and in his later years, Lake Windermere, even though he had to adapt to a new environment, and it caused a disruption to his cherished routine.

Colin was pure of heart: no hypocrisy, guile, or hidden motives. He had a heart full of love and forgiveness and withdrew from being the center of attention. It was a joy to be gifted with his beautiful smile and sharp sense of humor. Colin’s gentle nature and quiet presence belied his inner strength and was in sharp contrast to his physical weakness.

Colin is survived by his mother Colette, his father Gordon, and his brother Cameron (Michelle), and beloved niece and nephew, Marlowe and Hudson. He also leaves to mourn his Uncles Morrie (Joanne) McIvor, Raymond, Marc (Sue), Aunty Dolores and cousins Meghan (Randy), Tighe, Nola, Kallum (Brittany), Jett, and Hannah (Russ), Lewis. He was predeceased by his grandparents Vit and Marcelle Barylo, and Don and Ellen McIvor. Rest easy Colin. We will always love you and feel privileged for the time we shared with you.
