Obituary of William Andrew Hogg

September 28, 1941 - Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

April 24, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Andy Hogg, beloved husband of Suzanne Stahl, of Calgary, AB passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2022, at the age of 80 years.

Born in into a large, loving family of Scottish and Swedish heritage and growing up in Saskatoon, Andy loved the wonderful times spent with his grandparents and a multitude of aunts, uncles and cousins in both Saskatoon and his mother’s hometown of Trossachs, SK.

During high school at Nutana Collegiate in Saskatoon, Andy was a member of the RCAF Auxiliary as an instrumentation technician but was truly passionate and proud of the adventurous summers he spent doing fieldwork in Northern Saskatchewan, BC, Yukon and NWT during his university years. Andy graduated from the U of S (Saskatoon) with a B.SC in Geology and an M.SC in Paleontology. Andy started his 40-year stint as a career geologist with Marathon Petroleum at their Research Institute in Denver and then moved to Calgary to work in their Canadian office. As a geologist, he had a wonderful career with many companies in Calgary, Denver and Australia, and he developed many close friendships along the way. Andy was a member of CSPG (pre-retirement), a life-member of APEGGA, and a member of the Explorer’s Club.

Andy truly loved his families (all of them!). He was first married to Sonja and had his cherished daughters, Andrea and Amy; then married to Lynne Hannis (deceased 2001) and inheriting Lynne’s 4+1 wonderful children; then Suzanne, and her three kids. He adapted to rolling with the punches and maintained a sense of humour, pride and love throughout all his relationships.

Andy loved sports (he played hockey and football), music (Johnny Cash was his favourite), skiing, cooking (and food, in general!), and, in his later years, model shipbuilding. Travelling with family was his ultimate joy, with his favourite places to travel being Hawaii, Turtle Lake, SK and North Carolina. He made friends wherever he went. Andy will be most remembered for his love of people, his unabashed irreverence, his sense of humour and his story-telling ability. Andy possessed a near-photographic memory, was an avid reader, a history buff, and an uncanny geographer. He brought warmth and humour to all of his relationships.

Besides his wife, Suzanne, Andy is survived by two daughters, Andrea (Bryan) Davidson and Amy Hogg; stepchildren, Stuart Stahl (Mia Jensen) and Angela Smyth; and granddaughters, Riley, Reagan, and Reese Davidson. Andy is also survived by his sister Linda (Don) Galbraith of Saskatoon, brothers-in-law, Jim (Sara), and Lee (Laura) Duncan of North Carolina, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Andy was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Norah Hogg; brother Jim Hogg; and stepsons, Mitch Hannis, and Sean Stahl.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, June 9, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.  Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Andy's service streamed live (see below) on the day of the serviceCondolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.
