Obituary of Tok Chong Kim

November 25, 1942 - May 19, 2022

With a heavy heart, we announce that Tok Chong Kim, also known as Tom, of Calgary, AB passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2022 at the age of 79 years.

Tom was born in North Korea on November 25, 1942. He was one of six children born to Hyung Doh Kim and Bok Suk Oh. He attended school in South Korea, achieved a black belt in Judo, fulfilled his duty with the Korean army, and immigrated to Canada in 1970 with his family to build a new life. He married Kang Shin Kim in 1971 in Edmonton, AB. Tom and his wife ran a grocery store together in Edmonton.

In 1980, Tom had a brain aneurysm, and by a miracle, he survived and overcame many challenges in his life. He had many life struggles during his journey on this earth, but his faith in God never wavered. His favourite pastime was to quote almost any passage in the Bible. 

Tom is survived by his wife, Kang Shin Kim, and his two children, Shelly and David, son-in-law, Jean-Marie, daughter-in-law, Hyun Jeong, and three grandchildren, Lucas, Joel, and Jules. He is also survived by his brother, John, and sister, Sunny, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, Sandra, John, Nancy, Bob, Ben, Grace, Vivien, and Dan.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, May 28, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. Following the ceremony family and friends are invited to lunch. Graveside Service to follow at Queen's Park Cemetery. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mr. Kim’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
