Obituary of Budge Burrows

Neville (Budge) Burrows, passed away on Friday, May 27, 2022 at the age of 84 years after a brief illness.

 

Budge was born to William and Marjorie Burrows in Hokitika, New Zealand. After finishing at Wellington Teachers College (Wellington, NZ) and teaching in the area, he started travelling the world. Canada caught his attention and he started as a teacher with the Calgary Board of Education. A champion for the French Immersion program, Budge was principal at McDougall, Westgate and Varsity Acres elementary schools before retiring in 1997. An enthusiastic musician, Budge played guitar and taught ukulele to many students as he passed through the schools.

 

A lifelong competitive swimmer in New Zealand and then in Master’s Swimming in Canada, and rugby player in both countries as well, Budge was always trying new sports and took up skiing after arriving in Canada, taking many roles in the ski community including Volunteer Ski Patrol and many years as a ski instructor. In later years he joined the Calgary Seniors Alpine Ski Club and enjoyed ski trips with friends. In the summers he loved camping and hiking in the mountains.

 

He is survived by his wife of 50 years Carol, children Joanne (Gary), and Paul (Melissa), granddaughter Kate, brothers Patrick Moore and Robin Burrows, and many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins. Budge was predeceased by his parents and his younger brother Bill.

 

A Funeral Service will be held McInnis & Holloway (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB) on, Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mr. Burrows’ service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted. Condolences, memories, and photos may also be shared and viewed there. If friends so desire memorial donations can be made to the Poppy Fund at legion.ca/donations or directly to the family for Kate’s education fund.

 

In living memory of Budge Burrows, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.
