Chris Knoechel

Obituary of Chris Knoechel

June 9, 1954 - July 14, 2022

Calgary, Alberta

Christian (Chris) Knoechel of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, July 14, 2022, at the age of 68 years.

Chris was born in Immenstadt, Bavaria, Germany on June 9, 1954, and moved to Edmonton, AB, as a baby. Chris graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. It was here that he met a lifelong group of friends – the MNLEs. He moved to Calgary, where he worked in the oil and gas field and established his family. After working for nearly 40 years, Chris retired from the National Energy Board in 2014.

Chris enjoyed golf, skiing, cars, telling stories, reading history books, drinking a beer, and having a good time. He loved spending time with friends and family both in Calgary and abroad. He rarely missed an opportunity to celebrate with those that he loved whether it was a birthday, a recital or just because. Chris liked to travel whether it was a trip to Germany, spending summer vacations with his family at Pigeon Lake, a weekend in Las Vegas, trips with the Hale family, or golf trips with his MNLE friends.

Chris accomplished much through his life but was particularly proud of his family. He will be most remembered for his love of family, friends, and a good time. He was always quick to share a story, a newspaper clipping he had saved just for you, or to provide you education on the finer points of his current dream car.

Chris is survived by his mother Irmgard Knoechel, two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Carolyn Knoechel, and Ben and Candice Knoechel; daughter and son-in-law, Anne Knoechel and Francois Boyer; and four grandchildren, Bennett, Chloe, Heidi, and Samuel. Chris is also survived by his partner Janina, the MNLEs, former wife Janice Knoechel, as well as numerous other relatives, cousins, and friends. Chris was predeceased by his sister Judy Knoechel, and father Kurt Knoechel.
