Condolences
Flipping through the Alberta Retired Teachers magazine today and on the "In Memoriam" page, James Philip Dean's name caught my immediate attention. To Jim's whole family from my whole family, our sincere condolences.
Before his career with the Calgary Board, Jim arrived at my parents farm at Mossleigh, Alberta where he began his teaching career directly from Yorkton. My parents boarded teachers for the small school and city-slicker Jim got an education on the farm and we enjoyed his funny company. He teased my dad that after supper he would proceed to the field - the chesterfield! I went into education as well and would run into Jim at conventions and workshops but sadly had lost touch with him after the passing of Geri.
I know you know how special he was and I just want to confirm that the Green family thought he was special as well.

Oh My, Dean family, what a loss. I clearly remember his sparkling personality when I began teaching in Lakeview,so many years ago. What an inspiration to so many. He made a difference in my life & many, many others...Florence Cybulsky
To family and friends of Jim Dean...I was so sad to read of his passing yet his obit is full of the joy and endearment that was Jim to the full. I was so fortunate to have known him a bit during my tenure with CBE. Jim was fun and still so full of wisdom. From him I learned the profound lesson to 'always try to go behind the behavior and see the fear'. This served me well in my role as a principal and to this day as a person.
Jim knew and reflected the greatest wisdom of all...kindness.
The light of his life was Geri and only with the support of his family and friends was he able to go on with his life after she passed ...and now they are together again. Rest in peace
I remember Jim both as a teacher when I was young and then as a colleague at CBE many years later. He was a wonderful teacher and, although I didn’t work closely with him at CBE, a strong and compassionate leader in that organization. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time in their lives. My memories of Jim will always be positive ones.

Jim was a part of my CBE experience - from junior teacher to Area I Specialist. Wasn't I fortunate to have his sensible kindness and professional capacities interweave in my career? Jim made a major difference to me, and also my family, through those times.
Thank you, Jim. You are remembered fondly~

My sincere condolences go out to Jim's family and dear friends on his recent passing. It is a great loss to his precious family, countless colleagues, lifelong friends, and the organizations that he volunteered with. I was one of many teachers who benefitted from Jim's professional mentorship when I was an aspiring administrator with the Calgary Board of Education. Jim always took time to discuss my career goals and recommended specific schools for me to apply to, suggesting leaders that I could learn from. His advice was invaluable, as I worked with outstanding administrators who shaped my leadership skills throughout my career. He was always a welcome presence in schools with his positive attitude, beaming smiles, and a true interest in students and all staff members. Jim loved to hear and to tell good stories and his sense of humor was renowned!
I recall how proud he was of Geri and his three children, giving them the highest praise when conversations turned to his personal life. Although his dementia diagnosis was a sad part of his journey, his joyful light will continue through the treasured memories of loved ones and acquaintances alike.

Meeting Jim soon after settling in Calgary in the late 60's was the beginning of a journey filled with warmth, humor, and good cheer.
Every occasion professional or social was enhanced by his presence.
His dedication to those less privileged and fortunate was an inspiration
I was saddened to hear that Jim passed away last week. Unlike many of his long-term friends, I only had the privilege of working with him for a few days in 1978 when Jim was about to retire and I arrived in Calgary to take the position he was about to retire from. I could not have wished for a better person to introduce me to the Calgary Board of Education. He welcomed me warmly and enthusiastically to an awesome new role, full of rich opportunities, complexity and new challenges. I also benefitted handsomely from his mentoring me into the exceptionally rich culture of the CBE. The only thing that caused me some anxiety was the immense respect and love his downtown colleagues showed for him. I wondered if I could ever earn that level of respect from my future colleagues - but Jim had nurtured such a strong culture with his staff that I needn't have worried too much about being accepted. To Jim's family, I can say that he was wise, welcoming, passionate about education, and a man with a great sense of humour. There was not a pompous bone in his body. (This is a somewhat rare characteristic for some people in high office.) I am a better person because I knew Jim Dean. Rest in peace, my friend. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

We extend our condolences to Jim’s family at this time of great loss. Jim was an outstanding teacher, educational leader and community member. We appreciated his work on behalf of the youth talent show at the Calgary Stampede where we always had a good visit with Jim each year. Everyone who knew Jim admired his wonderful sense of humour and ability to live each day to the fullest. We can all take comfort in many good memories of a life well lived.
I first met Jim at Tim Hortons.
I recall he was solving the New York crossword!
It amazed me how he did it!
We formed a friendship from there and progressed to beers @ OJ’s ; where stories and laughter were the order of the day; after a long day of work(that was me working) Jim would tell you me he’d done his time.
True Friends are hard to come by, but I knew Jimmy was my true friend!
I will miss him and cherish our times together.
RIP my friend.
Shalom
My first memories of Jim were at University Elementary School. You didn’t want to miss a recess, as Jim was in the staff room keeping everyone in stitches. Later, he was our Area I Director. He encouraged me in my career and always had sound advice. We also met at numerous social occasions. Jim always seemed genuinely glad to see you. He was a lovely man and I am sad at his passing.
Sincerely, Jane Baxter
It is with great sadness I have learned and shared with others the passing of my dear friend, mentor and colleague Jim Dean. My relationship with Jim and his dearly departed wife Gerry was first established shortly after my arrival in January 1972 from New Zealand and early employment at U.E.S. with the Calgary Board of Education. The years which followed quickly illuminated the bond of our friendship with Jim, both professional and personal. This is well reflected in the many occasions that we and our many friends have shared the memories, happiness and the joy brought to our lives over the years that we have experienced with our dear friend Jim Dean.
Jim has touched my life and that of many others in unmeasurable ways.
Rest in peace dear friend Jim Dean
