Obituary of Henry Rempel

November 9, 1933 – Provost, Alberta

July 27, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Henry Rempel, beloved husband of 66 years to Bette Irene Rempel (nee Dafoe), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at the age of 89 years.

Henry was born in Provost, AB on November 9, 1933. After graduating grade 12 from Chilliwack High School, he began working for Canada Safeway where he retired as Senior Vice President of the company 29 years ago. At that time, he and mom permanently moved to Vernon, B.C., where they enjoyed everything the Okanagan had to offer.

Dad was an avid skier and would try to break his record of 100 days skiing each season on Silver Star Mountain in Vernon, B.C. His grandson Michael said it best one evening after a full day on the Star, "my grandpa doesn't walk up the stairs very good, but you should see him ski!"

Henry was a talented carpenter and made beautiful wood pieces up until the time he was unable. He loved gardening, nature and watching his beautiful flowers come to bloom. In the summer, mom and dad's kitchen was always full of the labours of his love.

Henry loved tennis and was involved in the men's tennis league at the Kalamalka Country Club in Vernon, B.C. He loved the sport. He also spent countless hours on the grounds of the club making the lakeside property beautiful for all members to enjoy. In his honor, when they built the new clubhouse, the members hung a sign over the entrance naming it the “Henry House”.

His love for his grandchildren Amy and Michael knew no bounds. He shared his love of skiing, tennis, swimming and taught them to always experience everything possible. Every time they were together, he shared with them his love of food and could always get them to try his favorite dishes. Forever they will remember him and love peaches and cream, perogies with grandma's special gravy and Mennonite sausage.

Henry will be most remembered for his boundless energy and love of life. From the moment his feet would hit the ground in the morning until he went to bed at night, he was a going concern. His nickname of "Superhuman Dynamo" fit him perfectly.

He was a son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather who loved his family and was always our strong foundation. He was a friend who was always ready to drop anything he was doing to be available. His was a life well lived; too precious to be forgotten and too priceless to ever replace. Dad truly was one special man. Hey Dad…I love you more.

Besides his loving wife Bette, Henry is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jody and Dr. George Liscombe of Nanton, AB; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Louellen Rempel of Abbotsford, BC; and two grandchildren, Amy Liscombe of Limerick, Ireland and Michael Liscombe of Dallas, Texas. Henry is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, David and June Rempel of Vernon, B.C; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Henry was predeceased by parents, Helen, and Dietrich Henry Rempel and Tara “The Wonder Dog”.
