Obituary of Renee Smith
July 15, 1925 – Carlisle, England
August 6, 2022 – High River, Alberta
Renee Smith (nee Messenger), of High River, AB, passed away peacefully at the High River hospital, on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at the age of 97 years.
Renee was one of nine siblings who grew up on Morton Farm in Carlisle, Cumbria. In 1954, she and her husband, Arthur Smith, immigrated to Burnaby, BC for a job opportunity.
Renee developed a deep friendship with Olive Beeby and they became like sisters! There were many great visits and vacations with the Smith and Beeby families. Treasured memories!
In 1964, Arthur’s work moved the family to Edmonton, AB where they spent a number of happy years. Renee and Arthur retired to High River in 2005 so they could be closer to family. Renee had many friends right from her childhood days in Carlisle as well as in Burnaby, Edmonton, Calgary and finally High River.
Renee will be lovingly remembered by her daughter in Scotland, Marjorie (John) Ashburn, granddaughter Eileen (Colin) Fenwick. Also, granddaughter Diane (Jimmy) Hunter and their families. She will be remembered by her sister, Joyce Nixon, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Left with many happy memories are her daughters Brenda (Gord) Hyland and Joan Cartwright of High River.
She also leaves a big hole in the hearts of her five grandchildren in Canada, Geoff (Karen) Hyland, Pam (Jeremy) Round, Chris (Lori) Hyland, Shane (Kerry) Cartwright and David Cartwright. Nans was always there for them. Five great-grandchildren will miss her tremendously Emily, Charlotte and Abby Round; Maisy Hyland and Dylan Hyland.
Renee was predeceased by an infant son Colin, her parents, seven siblings and her beloved Arthur after a wonderful marriage lasting more than 60 years.
A Celebration of Renee’s Life will be held at the Crystal Ridge Golf Course (9 Crystal Green Lane, Okotoks, AB) on Sunday, September 4, 2022 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a short program at 3:00 p.m. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
The family would like to give sincere thanks to Renee’s family physician, Dr. Sarah Makhdoom, who provided compassionate care for Renee for many years.
