Memorial Service

Condolences
Mrs. Mishra together with Mr. Mishra were always welcoming to me and my family through the many years I was in Calgary from childhood through to adulthood. We are grateful for having known her, especially looking back now and hearing so many similar stories from friends and family. -Omar Ansari and Tong
Goodbye Aunt Mary. I can still remember my Grandfather calling you "Wee Mary" and yet you lived longer than your siblings (my Dad and Aunt Mo). When you have helped others, and helped to enrich other peoples lives, then it is truly a life well lived. And you did all of that and so much more.
I also wanted to leave a quick note for Veena, and say what a wonderful job you did on the service. Dereth and I were sorry we couldn't be there, but we watched it live and loved hearing all the different stories and the many ways Aunt Mary had positively affected others. It was a wonderful service and a fine tribute to your Mom. She will be missed by many.
And yet while Aunt Mary is now gone, I hope it brings some comfort to those of us that knew her and cared for her, that the lives she has touched and enriched live on, and are so much better for having had her in our lives.
I first met Mary when I began my career as a children's librarian at Burnaby Public Library. From the
very beginning, I knew that Mary was special. While she appeared to be a gentle soft spoken woman, she
was not one to be pushed around. She never acted in self interest but always for the good of others. With
her wisdom and great sense of humour, Mary knew how to accomplish goals. In her time at BPL. Mary was
behind many innovative improvements to service for children. Her legacy still carries on today.
I was immediately included in Mishra family events and have always thought of them as my second family.
The lively conversations, feasts and storytelling greatly enriched my life. Mary was always so generous and fun
to be with. One could go years without seeing her in person and pick up right where you left off. Hers really was a
life well lived. My family and I are so grateful that she was part of our lives and will always carry her wisdom and
kindness with us.
Mary always used to say that she and the Queen were the same age. I think Mary would find it interesting that
Elizabeth passed on exactly 4 weeks after her.
Almost as soon as I met Vikram Misra, my future husband, in the early 1970’s, I was welcomed into the Mishra family. This was first in the Burnaby home, then later in Braeside, Calgary. I was made to feel so much at home by both Aunt Mary and Uncle Narendra chachaji. I have so many memories of warmth and delicious food in gatherings of family and friends. Aunt Mary led a very rich and fulfilling life. She was there for us for many, many years and is now greatly missed.
Meera Taiji was my Aunt ( Dad's sister in law) A major icon in my life She influenced me by gifting me most beautiful books. My parents marriage had her support inspite of family opposition. Apart from this she was a very genuine person with lots of affection for her numerous nieces and nephews Good Bye Dear Taiji Thank you for your amazing inspiring influences in my life My Respects and Love -Rubu
I became a new immigrant to Canada in May 1974 and landed in Vancouver-BC. Within days I and my wife met Mishras in their Vancouver home to get their advise on how to get a job and settle down. Our friendship started then and grew stronger over years.
I moved to Calgary in 1976 and Mishras moved there too in 1981. We started meeting on several functions like Vedanta Society, Ragamala, Diwali and X-mas celebrations. Many functions were held in their home where Meeraji(we called Mary that respectfully) served us sumptuous Indian meal. We always liked her presence in chats over hot pot of tea after dinner. She was soft spoken and very well mannered and made every person very comfortable as a good host. We all admired her for that and respected her very much.
She has shown us all how to take a alien culture and accept and live it well.
We are going to miss our Meeraji very much. May her soul find eternal peace in Vaikunta(heaven).OM Shanti Shanti SHANTIHI.
When I remember Mary I will recall:
Her irreverence
Her dislike of pretention of any kind
Her strong sense of self
Her deep appreciation for her family roots and background
Her clear eyed intuitive take on situations and people
Her lack of sentimentality
Her graceful acceptance of every stage of life
Her love of getting to the mountains
Her love of cats especially her childhood cat
Her strong relationship with her husband and family and extended family
Her gratitude for her life
Her amazing hospitality
Her cheeky sense of fun
Her compassion
Her instinct for saying just the right comment to support people at just the right time
Her inclination to support the underdog
Our weekly visits at Fish Creek Park in warmer weather and at an indoor fish pond in Winter. When I dropped her off she always said ' "Thank you for getting me out."
She was a kindred spirit it and I was so lucky to have had her as a friend.
Our family will always cherish memories of the Mishra gatherings.
What a wonderful woman! I became branch librarian in charge of the Cameron Library in the Burnaby Public Library system in 1980 & I couldn't have done it without her help. I must have called her twice a day or more with questions & she was so so patient with me. I haven't seen her in years, but I have such fond memories of her. Linnea Gibbs
Mary Mishra so aptly called Meeraji glowed remarkably in her everyday interaction with people. Mr. Narendra Deo Mishra who she was married to was one lucky man, It always reminded me of Krishna - Meera who were although wide apart were so close.
Meeraji was a literary person who was conversant with Hindu Philosophy. She was well-grounded.
She made this world a better place. She leaves it even better. My children will remember her.
To Almighty I would only pray that her soul rest in eternal peace, and give lots of strength to the family of this beautiful soul.
OM Shanti Shanti Shanti !
