Obituary of Barbara Rufina McCullough

December 15, 1932 – Calgary, Alberta

August 12, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Barbara Rufina McCullough, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend of many passed away peacefully on Friday, August 12, 2022, in the presence of her children. Barbara leaves behind four loving children, Dorothea Smyth, Bernie Smyth (Louise), John Smyth, and Michael Smyth, five grandsons, Phillip (Jenny), Daniel, James (Beth), Anthony (Claren), and Mark; and four great-grandchildren, Elaina, Hanna, Genevieve, and Grace.

Barbara was born in Calgary, AB to Ernest and Dorothea McCullough on December 15, 1932. Those who loved and knew Barbara will always remember the wonderful gatherings in her home where she filled the house with music, singing, laughter, and fun. Barbara loved a good joke and shared many of her own. With her charm and charisma, she would welcome anyone to the party. We will miss gathering around the piano as she played her favorite songs from the forties.

She studied music in Portland Oregon and Toronto and received her ARCT. She was an accomplished pianist and taught piano up until the last few weeks of her life. She was a true lady, polite, refined, and elegant. She had a rare smile that focused on you and made you feel special in that moment. She loved her children dearly and would do anything for them. She persevered through life’s trials with joy and optimism. She will be dearly missed.

Barbara was the last leaf on the tree. She was predeceased by her brothers, Ernie McCullough and Danny McCullough, and sisters, Noreen Ayer, and Suzanne Shannon.
