Obituary of Bernice McPhail

May 29, 1929 - St. Catharines, Ontario

It is with heartfelt sadness that we share the passing of Elsie “Bernice” McPhail of Calgary, AB on Friday, August 12, 2022, at the age of 93 years.

Bernice was born in St. Catharines, ON, on May 29, 1929, to William “Bill” and Elsie Tempest. In her younger years, Bernice could be found alongside her father taking part in outdoor activities and helping in his service station as she showed great interest in automotive repair. This led to meeting the love of her life, Matthew McPhail.

They were wed on June 25, 1949 and were married for over 51 years until Matt’s passing in 2001. In the early years of their marriage, Bernice worked in a hospital as a nurse’s aide until starting a family. Bernice loved children and having trouble conceiving their own, lovingly chose to adopt. Their son, Bill was added to the family in 1956 and then their daughter, Brenda in 1959. While raising their children, Bernice would often take the lead in planning family events. They enjoyed camping, fishing and just spending time with each other. She always took great joy in celebrating holidays, especially Christmas.

After their children left home, Bernice devoted a great deal of time to her mother. Their days were filled with shopping, lunches, road trips, laughter and going to church together. It wasn’t until her mother’s passing in 1990 that Bernice and Matt decided to move west in 1992 to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

It was here in Alberta that they started a new chapter of their lives, surrounded by family and many new friends. Bernice will be fondly remembered for her dedication to her Lord, the church, and others.

Bernice is survived by her son Bill, daughter Brenda (Glen), nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Ruth (Hugh), and brother Ron, as well as many nieces and nephews. Bernice was predeceased by her husband Matt and her daughter-in-law Kim.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McInnis & Holloway (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, August 18, 2022, from 1:30 to 2:00 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB), on Thursday, August 18, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Bernice's service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service. Condolences, memories and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
