Obituary of Donald Eugene Christopher McCarthy

Donald McCarthy of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2022 at the age of 51 years.

 

Donald was born in Montreal, QC on October 22, 1970. He moved with his family to Calgary, AB in 1977. Donald graduated from Bishop Grandin in 1988. He volunteered with the Young Canadians of the Calgary Stampede and appeared in the Hidy and Howdy mascot program for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. Donald performed with various companies throughout his life, including Rod Gordon’s Moving Company; Theatre Calgary; Canadian Stage; Rainbow Stage; numerous shows on Celebrity Cruise Lines and Princess Cruise Lines; The Sandcastle in Guam; as well as on the Las Vegas Strip in numerous production shows including; Rick Thomas at the Tropicana; Spellbound at Harrah’s; Jubilee at Bally’s: Folies Bergere at Tropicana; and Siegfried and Roy at the Mirage.

 

Donald loved all sports and was a die-hard Toronto Blue Jays fan, and watched their spring training numerous times in Florida with his father. Donald met Debbie Dziok while they were both working on cruise ships. They married in June of 2001. Donald and Debbie both loved to travel and they visited Bali, Australia, New Zealand and Alaska.

 

Donald loved the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost and would recite it from memory, emphasizing the last lines;

Two roads diverged in a wood and I,

I took the one less travelled by

And that has made all the difference

 

Donald is survived by his daughter Marie; and two sons, Damian and Christopher. Donald is also survived by his mother Mary McCarthy and sister Heather Ann McCarthy; as well as nieces, Catherine and Jade, and nephew James; many cousins, friends, and castmates too numerous to count. Donald was predeceased by his father Dr. John McCarthy, and brother Timothy John McCarthy.

 

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Friday, September 16, 2022 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

 

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Friday, September 16, 2022 at 7:00 p.m.

 

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Drive S.E., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at the St. Bonaventure Church. Graveside Service to follow at Queens Park Cemetery.  Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
