Obituary of Helen Makar

December 10, 1933 - September 13, 2022

In loving memory of Helen Makar (nee Lysiak) who passed away on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at the age of 88 years, after a brief battle with cancer.

A beloved mother, grandmother, wife, sister, and friend, Helen was one of the warmest and kindest people you could ever meet. Her very-full life revolved around taking care of and serving others. After raising her three children, Helen redirected her focus to “anything grandchildren.” Countless hours were spent attending their sporting events and activities including, hockey, basketball, field hockey, football, soccer, school plays, band concerts, etc. Helen lived for get-togethers and would host large family dinners, making cookies and soup for everyone regularly. She would always take the time to challenge anyone, young and old, to a game of crib.

Her working days started as a phone operator with AGT, and she's fondly remembered as the service desk "voice" at the Brentwood K-Mart. Upon retirement, Helen and Pete enjoyed numerous trips to Las Vegas or Reno with friends and relatives, attending Stage West, Jubilations, and any Elvis show! Helen’s final weeks were highlighted by a very personal visit with the Stanley Cup (courtesy of her grandson Cale), and many family and friend get-togethers. There was no shortage in the expressions of love and gratitude that everyone felt for her. Mom, Grandma, Helen, you will be deeply missed.

Helen was predeceased by her husband Peter in 2015. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Dale and Ilona, Gary and Laura, and Donna and Dan; and her eight grandchildren, Brett (Ashlyn), Joey, Lucas, Cale, Taylor, Lindsey (Derek), Mark, and Robin.

A Celebration of Helen’s Life for family and friends will be announced at a later date. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Canadian Red Cross Society - Ukrainian Humanitarian Crisis Appeal at www.redcross.ca/donate.

A very appreciative thank-you to the many people who visited and helped care for Helen and our family in Mom’s final days at The Manor Village Varsity.

In living memory of Helen Makar, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.
