Condolences
I worked with Don at Texaco although not in the Exploration department. I knew him better from the retirees "Elderstar Club" where he was the editor of the newsletter. He was a quiet and gentle man and his love of bluebirds was well known. He made this world a better place and he will be missed by many.
My deepest sympathies to Andrew and his brothers. I met Don once and his legacy among the birding community will continue for decades to come.
Dear Stiles Family,
Thank you for sharing such an insightful and well-written biography of Don. Good fortune smiled upon Don. Clearly, he payed it forward in a very widespread manner. May his legacy live on through your family especially and through his acquaintances in general.
It seems even in his passing he is sparking the embers of fond memories within former Texaco employees, amongst others. Despite my employment with Texaco, my limited contact with Don occurred in Cypress Hills over a weekend nature trip (1987?). Janet A and I were comfortably set up in a small shared tent, Don had bombed down alone from Calgary and was sleeping "rough" in his car, as was apparently his weekend nature trip "style". We tromped far and wide, saw much flora and fauna. I'm pretty sure it was all very accurately registered. It was an outdoor treat.
I have fond memories of working with Don at Texaco. His competence as a geophysicist, massive amount of experience, and calm nature had a positive impact on my own career. Thank you Don. I will miss you.
Don was a good mentor and one of the nicest guy in the office. He always has a smile on his face and was always receptive to ideas and willing to help. Condolences to his family.
Sad to see this news. Don will be missed. He's been there at Nature Calgary (CFNS) meetings all my birding years. I've bumped into him in Parks out birding, and at history talks and even outside these normal haunts. He was so involved and so consistent. And he's always been such a quiet, calm, gentle person, yet a strong force for nature. He has a huge legacy in this area, and it's so interesting to learn what a legacy he had in geophysics and in helping others too. He's made the world a better place and I will miss seeing him. May you be comforted in your loss by knowing his was a good and active life right to the end. Fly on Don, and may there be bluebirds in heaven to greet you.
