Obituary of Freda Muriel Stewart

October 25, 1929 – October 19, 2022

Freda Stewart, of Calgary, AB passed away on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at the age of 92 years.

Freda was born in a small town in Saskatchewan on October 25, 1929, she moved to Crooked Creek in 1930, and on to Grande Prairie in 1944. When Freda completed high school, she moved to Edmonton, where she attended business college to complete her legal secretary training. Tired of the legal system, Freda decided to study to be a nurse’s aid, and later she went to the University of Saskatchewan to become a nurse. Tired of shift work she went back to school to do medical records. In 1954, she adopted her daughter Norma, then in 1958 Freda met and married Marvin Stewart. The family moved around Alberta for the next thirteen years, supporting Marvin’s career of trucking in the oil patch.

Freda was a voracious reader who always loved to learn, avid seamstress who loved knitting and quilting and was always talking about genealogy. She was a woman who liked to volunteer, who fought for what was right, and would ferociously defend the ones she loved. She will be deeply missed.

Freda is survived by her daughter Norma Mackenzie, two grandchildren, Chris (Jen) MacKenzie, and MJ MacKenzie, three great-grandchildren, Mathieu Herault, Abigail Herault, and Caleigh MacKenzie; sister Shirley (Aaron) Knox, sisters-in-law, Clarine Knox, and Helen Fuhr; as well as many, many nieces and nephews.

Freda was predeceased by her husband Marvin Stewart, parents, Frank and Florence Knox, brothers, Irvine Knox, and Roy Knox; and sister Jean Kapler.
