Maria Trotta

Obituary of Maria Trotta

August 1, 1933 – Cosenza, Italy

October 28, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Maria Trotta (nee Manna) of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 28, 2022, at the age of 89 years.

Maria was born in Cosenza, Italy, on August 1, 1933, and was the eighth sibling of nine brothers and one younger sister. She immigrated to Canada in July 1959 and married Teolindo Giovanni Trotta on August 15, 1959, in Kamloops, BC, whereby they met only through a photograph exchange arranged by an aunt of Teolindo who knew both the Trotta and Manna families. Because all of Maria’s family lived in Italy, she eventually became home sick and subsequently the family moved back to Italy in 1967 for three years, prior to returning to Canada and settling in Calgary, where Teolindo had a brother Tanfirio.

Maria was a member of the Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Parish (formerly Our Lady of Grace) where she avidly attended mass weekly along with attending virtually every memorial service for every person of Italian descent whether she knew them or not. She also hosted many of the parish priests over the years, including former Bishop Henry, at her home in Renfrew.

Maria worked as a chambermaid at the Ambassador Motor Inn next to Bertino’s restaurant. She lived an exceptionally long and healthy life, living independently in her home for the past 87 years prior to her illness. She had a passion for caring and nurturing children, cooking, baking, sewing, and gardening. In fact, the first words to come out of her mouth whenever she greeted guests at the door was “Did you eat? Are you hungry?” There was always food prepared for whomever dropped in. Her most memorable vacations were when she returned to Italy to be reunited with her family.

Maria was very proud of her family and loved and adored her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sons, daughters-in-law, and all of her nieces and nephews. She will be most remembered for her kind nature, her traditional values, generosity, and religious faith, along with the many great feasts she prepared.

Maria is survived by her three sons, Joseph (Irene), Robert (Andrina), and Angelo; three grandchildren, Justin (Kayla), Lucas, and Joshua; and two great-grandchildren, Olivia, and Theo, all of Calgary, AB. Maria is also survived by her brother Tonino (Assunta), sister Ida, one sister-in-law Cinzia Manna, all of Cosenza, Italy, one brother-in-law Mario from Bologna, Italy, two sisters-in-law, Gilda, and Giuseppina; and one brother-in-law Tarcisio Trotta, all from Kamloops, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends in Canada and Italy.

Maria was predeceased by her husband Teolindo, parents Pasquale and Angela, eight brothers, nine sisters-in-law, and five brothers-in-law from the Manna and Trotta families, both in Canada and Italy.
