Obituary of Beth Wiwchar

September 13, 1936 - Kimberly, British Columbia

November 25, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Elizabeth “Beth” Wiwchar (nee Shannon), passed away peacefully at the Agape Hospice on Friday, November 25, 2022.

A staunch feminist, an ardent unionist, a long-time supporter of the NDP and a proud adoptive mother, Beth was known for her outspokenness and for never calling a spade something other than a spade. But her gruff exterior belied an inner generosity.

Beth was born and raised in Kimberly until she moved to Calgary to attend Mount Royal College. She worked for the City of Calgary before landing a job with the Bricklayers’ Union where she would stay until retirement. It was then that Beth started to work with the Alberta New Democrats to take on the issue of unfair labour practices. She was very involved with what is now the Calgary Varsity Constituency, at times being president, treasurer, and secretary. Beth was also secretary of the Calgary Women’s Caucus for many years and fought to acquire the Calgary office.

Beth is survived by her son Craig, daughter-in-law Melissa and grandson Jack. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Margaret Shannon, numerous extended family members, many loyal friends and people who have benefited by her political activism as well as her big heart. Beth was predeceased by her husband Nes Wiwchar, her parents Violet and Robert Shannon, and her brother Robert Shannon.

As per Beth’s wishes no formal services will be held.  A gathering in Beth’s honour will be held in the New Year. If you wish to be advised once a date and location has been arranged, please email bethwiwchar1936@gmail.com with your contact information.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Agape Hospice for their compassionate and professional care.
