Condolences
My dearest Marion, I am so sorry for your loss. My interactions with Gordon while gardening were few and far between but when we did meet up here and there our conversations were very informative. The love for the outdoors, and animals were always a part of our discussion. The connection of Fernie and our time skiing there was one of the biggest. The world is smaller as you get older and it brings those connections between people to the forefront. I know he will be dearly missed.
Dear Marion, we were sorry to hear of Gord’s passing. Please know you are in our thoughts. Big hugs, Brian and Debbie Stahl
A lasting memory I have of Gordon was riding snowmobiles at his ranch outside of Calgary. Ripping across the flat lands at god knows how fast. I was 13 or so! As we finished our ride near his house, I mistook gas for brake and plowed through his fence! Gordon just laughed. Rest in peace, Gordon.
To say Gordon was an entertaining character would be a gross understatement. I first met him in 1982 when we did our first dirt bike ride together. On that initial trip with us he rode so hard he actually broke the frame of his motorcycle! No matter, "throw it away, get another one". He quickly became a very welcome pal around the campsite, for he had an entire dufflebag full of Sara Lee puddings.......what flavour would you like? We never knew how many he packed; they just kept coming out! Hence, for the remainder of his riding time with us (some 35 years) the nickname "Puddin". Too many stories to tell. All worthy of major barrel laughs. The "Hard Riders" will miss him but the sounds of him singing cowboy songs to us will linger.
have known Gord for only 8 years. Within the last year or so, I worked very closely with Gord on various business dealings. I can say I enjoyed that work immensely; he was a good fiend, and enthusiastic, knowledgeable leader in all types of businesses, but particularly in the resource sector. Gord had an astonishing ability to grasp complex subsurface concepts, despite no formal training in engineering and geoscience. He led a mining company (Jasper) and assembled a suite of base and precious metal assets that are impressive in their potential. He had hoped to progress these assets to something much bigger, and this hope has now come to fruition. A number of professionals are now involved in Jasper and operate on the same level of determination and enthusiasm that Gord exemplified. We hope that this insidious diseases, which impacts so many people globally, can be overcome one day soon.
To know Gordon was to love him! If you were with Gordon you were laughing. When you looked at Gordon's grin, you knew that there was something cosmic around the corner - usually caused by Gordon. His story telling cannot be matched. His intellect and humour prevailed when he had the talking stick. Gordon, thank you for your mentorship, your beautiful leadership and your whit. You lived life like a little boy- and a giant simultaneously! With love to Marion, John, Ken, Dena, Kathleen and kin. Rest in peace dear Gordon, Scott and Lesley Hutcheson
My deepest condolences to Marion and family on the passing of Gordon. I have known Gordon for about 25 years, listening first to his always charming stories of land deals, financing escapades, and office building deals. My memories of Gordon, beyond the colourful business stories, is how amazing he was with his long battle with cancer. Every time I was worried this might be the last time I see Gordon, a couple months later he would be in classic form at a house party holding court with a audience of spellbound disciples. I'll be honest, I usually had to look twice as his appearance changed over the years, but he could sure really tell a great story, and he will be missed for the positive impact he had on many by growing his businesses and advancing the Calgary community. Special thanks and sympathies to Ken who kept me informed on his dad's health this past year, and led in important business dealings. Rest in peace, Gordon - you earned it.
Ah, very sad to hear. I got to know Gordon as a young associate at the Macleod Dixon law firm. He was a man of humour, flair and grace, whether in his interesting and varied legal practice and businesses or the intriguing adventures in a variety of sporting endeavours …. the list is large and , for me, a long time ago. But the remembrances are vivid and cherished. Godspeed Gordon.
Gordon was, indeed, one of a kind and a main reason for all his success was the fact that he was just a down to earth guy with remarkable social skills. He was a very positive influence in my life, and likely countless others, simply because of his decency as person and was always interested in what others had to say. We enjoyed sharing stories of our lives with each other and I fortunate to have known him.
Rest In Peace, Gordon.
I had the privilege of getting to know Gordon and Marion through my then partner and wife, who Gordon entrusted to run the Calaway Park family entertainment facility. Gordon could recognize talent and he picked winners in Bev and in the now GM, Bob. Once the wheels were in motion, he gave his team room to run, applying strategic direction as needed, but entrusting the day to day operations to his hand picked leadership. I saw evidence of Gordon’s conviviality on many occasions, but it seemed to shine down in Fernie and, at several IAAPA (theme park) conferences. Most memorable was a visit to New Orleans in 1996 where his epicurean knowledge was on full display at such famous venues as Antoine’s and Cafe de Bagnet. He was a bon vivant, an athlete, a business person, a lawyer, a father, a husband, a raconteur and so much more. He battled bravely with cancer for many years, with the support of Marion and the entire family. He will be greatly missed.
I met Gorden through my late husband Hans Johansen. Hans and him went long way back and Gorden loved to tell one of his many vists to supremcourt. He won the case on behalf of The professional Gardener and was proud of it, and rightfully so
.He gave me inspiration and courage to take over my husband s' business and gave me advise when i needed it. It was an honour to know him. May God rest his soul.
It was an honour and a privilege to know Gordon and serve on the board of Jasper mining with Him. He was wise, kind , welcoming and a great pioneer in Alberta, and the world . Touching many many lives all for the better . God Bless to all who have lost this great Man <><><>< The Cowboy Rides Away <<><>><<><>< Always Shelley & Blake Willard
