Obituary of Lois Baker

January 3, 1918 – Calgary, Alberta

December 5, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Lois Baker, of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on Monday, December 5, 2022, at the grand age of 104 years.

Lois was a native Calgarian. She was born at the Holy Cross Hospital and attended King Edward School, followed by Western Canada High School.

She married Robert Baker in August 1942 and Barbara was born eight years later. Robert passed away in February 1975.

Lois loved life. She particularly loved sports, gardening and animals. Five-pin bowling, curling and lawn bowling were sports that she excelled at, winning many trophies and awards.

Her garden was beautiful, and she managed it independently until the age of 90. Roses and delphiniums abounded, and the birch trees received the tenderest of care.

She was also a keen knitter in days gone by and won several prizes at the Calgary Stampede Craft Exhibition for her creations. She was famous for her baking and baked cookies until just a few weeks ago. Shortbread was her specialty.

In days gone by, Lois was fortunate to be able to travel – there were trips to Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Norway and many, many trips to the UK, where Barbara and Robin lived. She loved all the new sights and experiences.

Lois had an undaunted spirit and loved fun. She was greatly loved and will be missed by many. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara; son-in-law Robin; three grandchildren, Emily McConaghy (Alex), Christopher Rison (Phoebe), Jeremy Rison; and five great-grandchildren, Hattie and Eloise McConaghy and Otis, Rupert and Wilfred Rison.
