Obituary of Mickey Fijal

June 7, 1931 - Westbend, Saskatchewan

December 19, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

On Monday, December 19, 2022, Mickey Fijal, loving husband and father, passed away at age 91. Mickey was born on June 7, 1931 in Westbend, Saskatchewan to Anna and Joseph Fijal. He received a degree in Geology from the University of Manitoba in 1953 and an Education degree from the University of Calgary in 1961. He enjoyed a long and successful career as a geophysicist and was dearly loved by his students during his brief career as a schoolteacher. On September 15, 1953 he married Beverley Gayner. Together they raised five children: Michael (Lila), Gerry (Janet), Karen (Norm), Janine (David) and Tim (Insook).

Mickey’s greatest joys came from his connection to his beloved wife Beverley and family. He treasured each of his five children and twelve grandchildren - Erin (Devon), Ryan (Jenn), Michael, Hannah (Brett), Harlan, Dominique (Dan), Paul (Charu), Mathieu, Ian (Rosa), Philip (Georgia), JJ and Ben, and four great-grandchildren - Olivia, Luke, Benjamin and Patrick.

He revelled in sharing memories with them and making each feel uniquely valued and loved. Mickey radiated kindness, gratitude and respect to his last breath; even extending the love in his heart to the birds and squirrels in his backyard.

Mickey was predeceased by his parents, Anna and Joseph Fijal, and by his brother, Roy. He is survived by his wife Beverley, his five children, and by all of his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
