Obituary of Donna Irene Bates

Donna Bates, devoted mother, crafting queen, and scrabble enthusiast passed away on Friday, January 20, 2023, at the age of 88 years.

Beloved wife of the late David Bates of Calgary, AB, Donna was born in Moose Jaw, SK, on May 29, 1934 and married Dave there in March 1962. Their first son Stephen followed in 1963. After a brief period living in Regina, SK, they moved to Calgary, AB, where she ultimately raised five boys as homemaker extraordinaire.

Donna’s culinary acumen and attention to holiday detail would make Martha Stewart proud. She also had a passion for arts and crafts, winning many ribbons and awards at the Calgary Stampede annual arts and crafts competition, leaving a legacy of family treasures. Donna enjoyed gardening and was an avid dog lover. A savvy wordsmith, she was allegedly never beaten at a game of Scrabble or Boggle, and rarely missed solving the daily Herald crossword puzzle. Donna also enjoyed travelling with Dave and family around the globe.  

Donna is survived by her five sons and three daughters-in-law, Stephen, Douglas (Shelley), Jeffrey (Naoko), Michael, Jonathan (Lisa); and her five grandchildren, Rachael, Kailan, Olivia, Jenna, and Jessie. She is also survived by her two sisters Rena and Beth (Gordon), and their children.

Donna was predeceased by husband David, her parents Stuart and Lila Brodie; and initial fiancé, RAF Pilot Thomas Thorrat, who sadly died in a tragic 1954 aviation training accident.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB), on Friday, January 27, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., with a Graveside Service to follow at Queens Park Cemetery. Reception will follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mrs. Bates’ service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service.
