Obituary of Larry Poscente

May 4, 1944 - Antrodoco, Italy

February 4, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Lawrence “Larry” Poscente of Calgary, AB, passed away at the Dulcina Hospice, after a brief illness, on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at the age of 78 years.

Larry was born in Antrodoco, Italy on May 4, 1944 to Maria and Umberto Poscente. After his father passed away, he immigrated with his mother, and sister, Rita, settling in Calgary, AB, with his uncle and stepfather, Benedetto Poscente.

Larry was an outstanding athlete. He was a talented football, and basketball player but was exceptional in Track and Field. He broke many records and won many medals, trophies, and competitions.  Because of this, Larry was the first recipient of the Calgary Italian Sportsman’s Dinner Award in 1963, along with two of his friends.  Larry was very proud of this accomplishment and enjoyed celebrating and recognizing other recipients of this scholarship program at the annual award ceremonies.

For grade nine, Larry moved to Edmonton, AB, to attend the Faculty St. John and then came back to Calgary, AB, for the remainder of his secondary education, and graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1963. Afterwards, he continued his education at Calgary’s Mount Royal College, and SAIT, earning a ticket as an electrician. He worked with AGT/Telus/Telus Mobility from 1968 to 1999, starting as an electrical technician on the “rack”, working through many different positions, and retired as the Director of Engineering with Telus Mobility.

On September 2, 1967, Larry married Elizabeth “Liz” Piff, after a short courtship. Together, they welcomed their three children, and have resided in the community of Huntington Hills for the past 50 years.

Larry, an extremely generous and kind individual, paid it forward by volunteering as a Bantam Football Coach for the Calgary Hilltoppers for 20 years. More recently, he used his talents to help Angels for Mexico to build playgrounds near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and delivered food hampers for the Society of St. Vincent De Paul. Larry loved the outdoors, where he enjoyed golf, walking, fitness, gardening, camping, traveling, and sharing time and love with his family.

Upon retirement, Larry and Liz spent their winters in Hemet, California, USA. After about ten years in Hemet, CA, USA, they relocated to Mesa, Arizona, USA, where they have nurtured, and established many more lifelong friendships. His love of family and gentle, genuine spirit emanated from him.  His smile, his gentlemanly nature, his patience, his sense of humor, his class, and his humility made him stand out in the crowd.  He will always be remembered for those, and many more, attributes. He made everyone around him “feel” like family.

Larry will be most remembered for his generosity, kindness, and genuine spirit, and his love of family.

We would like to thank Dr. LaBrie and the Palliative Care Team at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, AB, as well as all the doctors, nurses, staff, and volunteers at the Dulcina Hospice in Calgary, AB.  Larry and all his family were treated with an amazing amount of respect and support while he was in their care.

Besides his loving wife Liz, Larry is survived by his daughter Lori (Randy) Graham of Calgary, AB; his two sons, Paul (Sheri) Poscente of Calgary, AB, and Jason Poscente of Lethbridge, AB; six grandchildren, Ryan and Brianne Graham, Kian and Arden Poscente, and Porter and Sheridan Poscente; as well as his two sisters, Rita Carloni (Walter Orechow) and Tina (Tim) Juristy.  He was a well loved and respected uncle, cousin, friend, and coach.

Larry was predeceased by his mother, Maria (nee Tognarini), his father, Umberto Poscente and his stepfather, Benedetto Poscente.
