Obituary of Tadeusz Konicki

With great sadness we announce that on June 24, 2020 surrounded by his loving family, Tadeusz (Ted) Konicki, at the age of 93, passed away at home. Tadeusz was born in Jablonowo, Pom., Poland. In 1944 at the age of 17, he was forcibly conscripted to the German army in Nazi-occupied Poland. Luckily, he saw no action and was freed by French partisans several months later. He was transferred and enlisted in the Polish Armed Forces based in Scotland. After the war, he settled in London, trained as a Pastry Chef and worked in several prestigious hotels including the Savoy Hotel. During the London years, Tadeusz developed his life-long love of music, especially opera, attending numerous concerts at Royal Albert Hall. In 1952, he decided to follow his dream to live near the Rocky Mountains and immigrated to Canada. Upon arrival, his first job was at the beautiful Banff Springs Hotel. His sense of adventure took him to work at the MacDonald Hotel in Edmonton; the DEW line in Cambridge Bay in the Arctic; on Queen Charlotte Islands (now Haida Gwaii); in Vancouver and he finally settled in Calgary. He was an avid photographer, documenting his travels, nature and his life. In 1959, on his first return visit to Poland, he met the love of his life Wanda and they married 3 weeks later on June 20. They welcomed daughters Barbara in 1961 and Anne in 1963. Tadeusz was fiercely proud of his Polish heritage, culture and deeply rooted in his Catholic faith. He was a life-long member of both Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish and the Polish Combatants’ Association (SPK #18) in Calgary. For many years, Ted worked at the Calgary General Hospital where he retired in 1990. In his retirement, he enjoyed travelling with Wanda and spending time with his grandchildren in Calgary and Vancouver. His memory will be cherished by his wife of 61 years, Wanda, his daughters Barbara (Pawel) and Anne (Ralph); grand-daughters Alexandra, Stefanie and Vitalisa (Denver); his sister Kazimiera and family in Poland. He was predeceased by his parents Franciszek and Marta and brothers Franek and Edward in Poland. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Peace Polish Catholic Church (2111 Uxbridge Drive N.W., Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. Graveside service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. We extend our heartfelt thanks to his outstanding health care team: Doctor Venter and his Home Care case manager RN Lukasz Z.
