Obituary of Mary Florence WILSON

WILSON, Mary Florence (nee Stevenson) July 5, 1920 - Shoal Lake, Manitoba July 3, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta We are sad to announce the passing of Mary Wilson on July 3rd, 2021 at the age of 101 years. Mary was born and raised on a farm near Shoal Lake, Manitoba, Mary was part of the last generation to experience the old prairie life: horse-drawn sleighs, wood stoves, and kerosene lamps. She graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1941 with a BSc in Home Economics and became a dietitian after an internship at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. She worked at Winnipeg General Hospital until 1950 when she married George Wilson, a geologist whom she had met in Yellowknife on a canoe trip in 1948. Mary had fond memories as a newlywed on Bowen Island and after George completed his Master’s degree at UBC, they set out to live and have children in Copper Mountain, Edmonton, and Dawson Creek before settling in Calgary in 1959. We remember Mary for her attention to her children and grandchildren and her matter-of-fact attitude to life’s challenges. Her enthusiasm for adventure led to many outdoor pursuits, including sailing excursions with George and a taste for international travel. Mary’s love of bridge, cryptic crosswords, and cribbage kept her mind nimble, and her expansive vocabulary made her a formidable opponent in family Scrabble matches well into her nineties. She moved to the Signature Manor in 2003 and then to Varsity Manor in early 2019. She is survived by her children Harold (Maureen Yeremy) Wilson, Gwendolyn (Mark) Larsen, Donna Wilson; grandchildren Alfred, Bronwyn and Owen Larsen. Mary was predeceased by her husband George and daughter Susan in 2004. Please forward condolences through www.hffs.com. A private funeral service will be held at The Church of the Good Shepherd. The family thanks the staff at both Manors for the care they extended to Mary in her final years when her memory declined.
