Obituary of Dorothy Marie McBride

Dorothy McBride of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at the age of 107 years.
Dot was born in Montreal, Quebec on January 15, 1916. She grew up in a wealthy family. But the Depression caused their family to lose everything, and the struggles began.
Dorothy was married twice and had one son named Ian from her first marriage. She lived in Montreal for 81 years and moved to Calgary in 1997 to be closer to her son Ian and his wife.
Dorothy started working when she was 17 years old during the Depression Era. She was a woman who worked as a secretary for many firms in Montreal. One of the most notable positions she had was with Sir James and Lady Dunn where she was the Executive Secretary. Sir James was the President and Owner of the Algoma Steel Mill in Sault Ste. Marie. He was a very bombastic man who was very demanding and required Dorothy to work at any hour.
Dorothy was a very active woman who loved to play bridge, socialize, and travel. She and her sister would go to the travel agent and then figure out where they would like to travel around the world. She travelled to all the states in the U.S.A and all the provinces except Manitoba in Canada. She travelled to many countries in Europe, all the British Isles, Turkey, Greece, and Trinidad. Her favourite trip was a paddle boat cruise down the Mississippi River. Dorothy also continued to write letters to two friends that also reached their 100-year milestone, that she used to play bridge with, in Montreal.
Dot is survived by her daughter-in-law Gail, as well as numerous friends. Dot was predeceased by her brothers, Donald, and Eric; her sister Clarice; and her son Ian.
Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB), on Thursday, March 2, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
