Obituary of Laura Doal

December 9, 1922 – Matheson, Ontario

February 19, 2023 - Edmonton, Alberta

Laura Doal of Edmonton, AB, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at the age of 100 years.

Laura lived a beautiful, gentle life full of kindness and compassion for others.  She had an unmatched sparkle in her blue eyes, and you always felt like the world was a better place when you spent time with her.

She was born in a small missionary hospital in Matheson, ON, on December 9, 1922.  She was raised by her strong and loving mother and lived with her three sisters, Victory, Eve, and Gwen with whom she shared a special love.

Laura grew up in Matheson, ON, and had a special bond with the Doal family. She knew from a young age that she would marry Don, the love of her life.  Laura graduated from nursing school in 1944 and went on to nurse at the Toronto East General Hospital, Kirkland Lake Hospital, Oshawa General Hospital, and in Bermuda. She touched so many in her career with her gentle ways.

Laura married Don in 1952 and they were married for 57 happy years, teaching us all about love and commitment. They lived in Ontario, Quebec, Calgary, Airdrie and Edmonton.  Their only child, Vicky was born in 1958. Laura was always a loving, attentive mother.

Laura was active in the United Church all her life. She was a member of United Church Women (UCW) and sang in the choir.  Laura was a Brownie leader for many years, a Kindergarten aide, and she volunteered at the Airdrie Food Bank.  She was a member of the Airdrie Legion, the Over 50 Club, and Seniors and Vets.  She loved to sing, read, grow flowers and, spend time outdoors especially at the cabin in Wabamun. She had many adventures with Don throughout her life. She was an avid scrabble player and loved a good game of crib and solitaire. She also loved to have a good time and was up for most anything. She was witty and clever and made us laugh.

Most important to Laura was spending time with her family, who will miss her deeply.  She is survived by her loving daughter Vicky and son in law Ken, grandchildren; Michael (Falyn), Steven (Sara), and Kimberly (Keaton).  Her face always lit up when she saw her great grandchildren, Katerina and Cameron and she was so pleased to meet her newest great grandchild, Louie.

Laura’s loving kindness will be remembered by all of us.  We were so lucky to have had her in our lives for so many years. We will move on in our lives the way Laura would have wanted us to - with laughter, smiles and gentle kindness, trying to make the world a better place.
