Obituary of David Cockfield

July 18, 1940 - Redcar, England

February 19, 2023 - Airdrie, Alberta

David, dearly loved husband of Elaine, father of Diane and Neil, and grandfather of Catrina, passed away peacefully February 19, 2023 at the age of 82. He will be sadly missed by each of them along with Diane’s husband, Kevin and Neil’s partner, Khadaryna. David is predeceased by his mother Gertrude and father Robert, along with his older siblings, Kathleen, Bessie, Rene, Muriel, John and Rob.

Having been born at the beginning of the Second World War David remained a proud Englishman despite living much of his life in Canada. As a young man, he would have liked to pursue his interest in Archeology, however the means to do so were not available. This would be an interest he would later share with his granddaughter Catrina. David would also have loved to have been a pilot, however his eyesight prevented this. He went on to work for many years in the structural steel industry and ended his career as a draftsman.

David always kept his love of aircraft, particularly war planes, of which he made many wonderful models over the years. He was also an avid historian, model train enthusiast, and Middlesbrough Football supporter (woe betide anyone who called it soccer). Another source of joy for David through his life were his two English Springer Spaniels – Abbie and Tina.

David loved to travel with Elaine and they were able to visit many countries in their 59 years together. David’s favourite destination was the island of Crete due to its history and how this influenced its’ people. Unfortunately, this love was curtailed over the past several years due to the rising costs of health insurance related to medical issues he experienced throughout his life.

David had a unique sense of humour. Upon meeting him, he could be perceived as grumpy due to his typical response when asked how he was doing as being “terrible”. This however couldn’t be further from the truth, and once people got to know him this was seen as an endearing quirk. David always liked to start up conversations and learn more about others, which resulted in those around him enjoying even brief encounters with his love and pride in his family often shining through at these times.

As he would say, “Until we meet again”.
