Obituary of Don Webster

June 12, 1933 – Winnipeg Manitoba

March 12, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

Donald Webster, of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on Sunday, March 12, 2023, at the age of 89 years.

Don was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on June 12, 1933, the second of three children, and big and little brother to his two sisters. Don graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and then articled with an accounting firm to get his Chartered Accountant (and later FCA) designation. Don moved to Calgary in 1958 and commenced his energy industry career with Chevron. Don left Chevron in 1972 to become the Director of Finance for the City of Calgary for a couple of years before returning to the energy industry in 1974.  Don retired from his executive position at Westmin Resources in 1990.

Don met Islay Roppel in Calgary and they were married in 1959.  Don and Islay raised four children in the northwest community of Brentwood. They were very involved in the community with all their children in sports and their active participation in the curling leagues at the Calgary Winter Club. The family relocated to Varsity Estates in 1977.

Don was very generous with his time and volunteered extensively when he had the opportunity to contribute to a cause.  Don’s time and efforts went to St David’s United Church, Triwood Community Association, the Mayor’s Financial Advisory Committee, University of Calgary Senate, 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics Organizing Committee, Financial Executives Institute, Diabetes Association, Arthritis Society, and several organizations associated with his chosen profession.

Don had many rewarding years of retirement, staying busy gardening, golfing, and spending time with family. Don and Islay enjoyed many fantastic vacations on Maui, their favourite holiday destination. They also spent many happy years cheering on their seven grandchildren in arenas and ball diamonds all over the city.

Don and Islay’s greatest legacy is the values that they instilled in their children and the tremendous strength of the family bond that has been created through their example. Don and Islay’s gift lives on and their presence will continue to exist at the regular gatherings of their ever-growing family.

Don is survived by his son Craig (grandchildren, Sydney and Austin), son Dean (daughter-in-law Lana, grandchildren, Kirstin, Chelsea and Nicole), son Blair (daughter-in-law Katie) and daughter Noreen Conway (son-in-law Brent, grandchildren, Hannah and Nolan), all residing in Calgary, Alberta. Don is also survived by his sister-in-law Audrey Tannas of High River, Alberta, brother-in-law Marcel Ferraris of Calgary, Alberta, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Don was predeceased by his loving wife Islay and his sisters Elaine Geernaert and Joyce Slater.
