Obituary of Dave Miller

December 28, 1962 – Edmonton, Alberta

March 10, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with heavy hearts that the family of David George William Miller must announce his passing on Friday, March 10, 2023, at the age of 60 years.

Dave was born the fifth child of Harold and Fran Miller and spent his early years growing up in Bowness, Calgary. When he was twelve, the family of eight uprooted and moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where he later graduated from Mount Royal Collegiate, 1980. Dave wasn’t sure of his next direction after high school and worked several odd jobs, but eventually found his way to SAIT in Calgary, and graduated as an Engineering Drafting Technologist in 1984. Heading back to Saskatoon, he ended up working for SED Systems where he met his future wife, Joan, working in the drafting department. The Fall of 1988, both Dave and Joan moved to Calgary looking for work and were married on November 6, 1993. Dave worked for several “tech-based” companies at the forefront of the communications industry including Novatel, Nortel, General Dynamics, and most recently SMART Technologies. Through Dave’s work at Smart, he was able to make several trips to China and South Korea. A highlight of his travels was touring the Great Wall of China.

Dave loved to try new cuisine and enjoyed cooking in the kitchen.  One of his favorite meals was crab. Dave was a big Calgary Flames fan and loved watching his hockey, collecting memorabilia, and getting to the odd game when he could.  He also cheered for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and had Liam singing ‘Green is the Color’ by the time he was four. Other great interests were golfing and fishing. He loved being out in nature, but hiking was only worthwhile if there was a fishing hole at the other end.

Dave valued his friendships and relationships above all else. He was a people person and was always ready to be a support or lend a helping hand.  He had a warm smile, a twinkle in his eye, and an infectious laugh that could always be recognized from across the room.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Joan (nee Richardson), and his kids, Tina, Amy, and Liam Miller. He will also be mourned by his mother, Frances Miller, and his sisters, Freda (David Kaplan), Lynda (Karen Robertson), Laura (Dave Flynn), Donna (Steve Robbins) ; and his brother, Harold (Wenqing) Miller. Dave was predeceased by his father, Harold George Miller.
