Brian Kilpatrick

Obituary of Brian William Kilpatrick

September 6, 1940 – Toronto, Ontario

April 14, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Brian Kilpatrick, of Calgary, AB, age 82, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side after a long decline in health. He was born and raised in Toronto, ON, the son of teacher Eunice (Long) and principal Palmer Kilpatrick.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Nina (nee Varley), son Paul (MiRan) of British Columbia, daughter Libby (Todd) Fraser, granddaughter Tessa Fraser of Nova Scotia, sister Cheryl (Lee) McRoberts of Illinois, US, nephew Tom (Jackie) McRoberts of Texas, US, and niece Heather (Oral) Bennett, of Illinois, US.

Brian began studying architecture at the University of Toronto at the age of 16 before moving to Vancouver, where he graduated from the UBC Architecture program. Ron Thom's West Coast style of architecture had captured his imagination. Brian practiced architecture for 56 years, first joining Ron Thom's Toronto firm, eventually becoming a partner followed by two partnerships in Calgary firms. Work included major hospitality projects in Ontario, BC, and the US. He had many loyal clients.

Brian's many talents became evident at an early age and included building a rec room during a parental absence, building radio timers and gizmos, a stereo set and more, before moving on to computers. His first project upon graduation was to build his parents' summer home, designed while still in school. This home continues to be a treasured retreat for his sister and family.

Work-related travel occupied a large portion of his earlier years, followed by trips to Europe and the States for pleasure. Winter getaways in the California desert and Victoria, BC, were favorites in later years.

Brian met his future wife Nina while attending weekly drawing classes at the Vancouver School of Art where she was a student. They were formally introduced by a fellow architectural classmate who was dating her twin sister, Norma. A five-month romance led to their marriage in Vancouver in 1966.

His sense of humour, timely use of a raised eyebrow, twinkling eyes, and steady reliability were cherished by his wife, children, and friends. Brian was a magnet for children and animals. Always humble. He was a gentleman.

A Celebration of Brian’s Life will be held on Friday, May 5, 2023, at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel (133 9 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2P 2M3) in the Oak Room, main floor, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a formal tribute at 2:45 p.m.
