Obituary of Barbara Marie Horn

August 3, 1935 - March 18, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Barbara Horn, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Barbara will be lovingly remembered by her son David “Skeek” (Shelley); adored grandchildren, Michelle (Branden), MacKenzie, and Kennedy; brother Rick (Marion) and Ginny (Danny); as well as many nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Catherine and Robert Bassermann, her sister Patsy, brother Robert, and sister-in-law Chris.

Barbara was born in Toronto, Ontario on August 3, 1935. She spent her elementary and junior high years in Toronto and together with her parents and siblings moved to Malartic, Quebec when she was in high school. Barbara was a proud and dedicated alumni of Queen’s University in Kingston where she graduated with her BA degree in Biology. Throughout her life she resided and worked throughout Canada and the U.S. including Ontario, Quebec, New York, and Austin, before she settled in Calgary. Barbara was a biologist and later worked as a stockbroker at Nesbitt-Burns where she was a Vice-President and Investment Advisor. She was passionate about her career and worked relentlessly to achieve success. She instilled in her son, David, and her grandchildren the importance of investing in your education and working hard to accomplish your goals.

Barbara was deeply engaged in all aspects of her life. She had a vast array of hobbies and interests including bridge, singing, stamp-collecting, politics, hiking, and travelling. She was an avid reader of fiction and financial literature. Barbara loved polar bears and one of her favourite memories with her family was taking them to Churchill, Manitoba to see the polar bears in the wild. Most of all, Barbara adored her precious “Skeek”, and she was incredibly proud of the father that he is to his three daughters.

At Barbara’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. In memory of Barbara Horn, there will be a Private Family Graveside service. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.

The family of Barbara Horn would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Amica Aspen Woods who lovingly cared for her for many years.

In living memory of Barbara Horn, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area.
