Obituary of Michael James Hill

April 14, 1950 - North Battleford, Saskatchewan

April 8, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Michael Hill (Mike) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2023, at the age of 72 years.

Mike was born in North Battleford, SK on April 14, 1950. He moved to Regina, SK, where he spent his childhood graduating from Campbell Collegiate in 1968. He then spent the next two years attending the University of Saskatchewan and playing for the Regina Rams, where he quarterbacked the team to two national championships in 1970 and 1971.

He moved to Edmonton where he obtained his law degree from the University of Alberta in 1977 and started practicing law. In 1981, he moved to Calgary where he continued to practice law and eventually led him to the position of Vice President of Law and Human Resources for Gulf Canada Resources in 1991.  Graf Canada was his passion project and started in 1996. He was very proud of the accomplishments of Graf and always accredited the people that worked alongside of him for the company’s achievements.

Mike was passionate about youth sports. He coached his son throughout his youth but continued after his son moved out of sports, to be a positive influence on many throughout the years. He started the Southern Alberta Selects and during that time the most important part was to provide opportunities for disadvantaged to play. He always spoke of those times coaching kids and the accomplishments they had along the way. He continued that passion watching his grandchildren dance or play basketball, softball, soccer, and hockey.

Mike is survived by his daughters Heather (Oliver) and Catie of Calgary, AB; and his son Tyler (Heather) of Edmonton, AB, whom he shared with Susan (nee Matthews); his nine grandchildren, Alysen, Sloane, Madilyn and Levi of Calgary, AB and Ryann, Camryn, Hailee, Ryder and Ethan of Edmonton, AB. Mike is also survived by his sister Laurie of Burnaby, BC; his brother Mark (Debbie) of Edmonton, AB; and his sister-in-law Jody of Saskatoon, SK. Mike was predeceased by his mother Dorothy, his father Donald, and his brother Patrick.
