Alfredo Barcelon

Obituary of Alfredo Malinay Barcelon

April 1, 1948 – Nasugbu Batangas, Philippines

April 17, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

Alfredo “Fred” Barcelon, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, April 17, 2023 at the age of 75 years.

Alfredo, known by most as Fred, was born in Nasugbu, Batangas, Philippines on April 1, 1948. Fred graduated from the University of the East in the Philippines with a degree in Business Administration.

He immigrated to Toronto, ON, Canada in 1974. Soon after, he met the love of his life, Loreto Dumo, and married in 1978. They lived in the Greater Toronto Area until they moved to Calgary, AB, in 2021 to be closer to their son, daughter, and grandsons.

Fred worked as a bus driver for the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) for over 25 years to support his family. He helped his hometown as the former president of the Nasugbu Canadian Association.

Fred was a loyal Toronto Blue Jays and Maple Leafs fan. If he wasn't watching a game, he was watching boxing and UFC with his son, cooking Filipino dishes for his apos (grandsons), arguing politics and walking with his daughter, praying with his wife and prayer group, or going to the Big House with his wife and sisters.

Fred's most memorable vacations were driving along the North American east coast to Virginia Beach, Florida, and Halifax, hitting the tables in Las Vegas, touring the Philippine Islands, and visiting family and friends in his hometown.

Fred was always the life of the party—singing loudly on the karaoke, dancing, and cracking jokes, usually with a beer in hand. Fred was also a fighter—in the school yard, on the streets, and in karate tournaments. His most epic battle was with his prostate cancer, which he fought like a champion, with his devoted wife always ringside.

He will be most remembered for his pride in his family whom he fiercely loved. All his adoring apos loved their Lolo's (grandfather's) cooking, his storytelling, his teachings (especially math), and his undivided attention.

Along with his loving wife Loreto, Alfredo is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Therese Barcelon of Airdrie, AB; his daughter and son-in-law, Maria and Jeffrey Mill of Red Deer, AB; and four grandsons, Alexander (13), Maximus (12), Benjamin (11), and Odinn (7).

Alfredo is also survived by his three sisters and brother-in-law, Crisanta and Francisco Andino of Toronto, ON, Angelina Barcelon of Toronto, ON, and Elenita Barcelon of Sacramento, California, USA; nephews, Richard Andino and Edsie Villadolid; nieces, Malou Andino, Elaine Viterbo, and Eloisa Bausas; as well as numerous cousins and friends.

Alfredo was predeceased by his mother and father, Maria and Sesinando Barcelon, and his brother Ernesto Barcelon.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Paul’s Catholic Church (1305 Main Street Airdrie, AB) on Friday April 21, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at Buffet Yangtze (4190, 901 64 Ave NE D, Calgary, AB) at 1:00 p.m. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mr. Barcelon’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service.
