Obituary of Luke Joel Westerveld

July 11, 1988 – Chatham, Ontario

April 15, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

Luke Westerveld of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at the age of 34 years.

It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our son and brother, Luke Joel Westerveld on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at the age of 34 years. Luke was born in Chatham, and grew up in nearby Merlin and later Blenheim, ON. He was one of six children and was raised with a strong Christian background that gave him the foundation that he lived for every day.

Shortly after graduating, he followed his call to the Canadian Armed Forces, which brought him to the West. His 34 years were filled with adventure, service, and loyalty. While out West, Luke discovered a heart for the mountains and the beauty of the outdoors. He was exceptionally talented at photography and had a way of capturing its essence. Wherever he ventured, it was always with a “Timmy’s” in hand or his Jet Boil nearby.

Luke loved his family and friends immensely. It seems everyone he came in to contact with had nothing but good to say about Luke’s character, whether it was dropping everything to help a friend or giving a complete stranger a listening ear or helping hand. Somehow while working with the military, he was also able to volunteer with organizations like Big Brother, Churches, and many others. His smile, contagious laugh, and kind words will be missed by all.

Luke was the beloved son of John and Nancy (Miedema) Westerveld of Chatham, Ontario; loving brother to Marcus Westerveld of South Buxton, ON, Rebecca Hayward of Chatham, ON, Rachel (Brad) Trout of Cape Town, South Africa, Matthew (Jenna) Westerveld of Blenheim, ON, and Ruth-Anna (Greg) Homewood of Chatham, ON.

Luke was also the hero to his nephews, Nathan, Jeremy, Reuben, and Jacob Hayward, Eben Trout, Noah Homewood, and nieces, Charis Trout, and Lilyan Homewood.

Luke is remembered fondly by Oma (Johanna Hendrika) Westerveld of Iona Station, Ontario.

He was predeceased by Opa (John) Westerveld, and Pake (Clarence) and Beppe (Betty) Miedema of Alymer/St. Thomas, ON, and his brother-in-law Robert Hayward of Chatham, ON.

Also remembered and loved by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends in Alberta as well as Ontario.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at the Glenmore Inn and Convention Centre (1000 Glenmore Ct SE, Calgary, AB, Calgary, AB) on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at the Glenmore Inn and Convention Centre on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the Glenmore Inn. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Luke’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service.
