Obituary of Frank Leslie Stone

May 15, 1932 – Trochu, Alberta

May 15, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness we share the passing of Frank Stone. Frank passed away at home in the early morning of his 91 birthday, May 15. Frank was born in Trochu, AB, on May 15, 1932.  Frank retired from the Calgary Transit in 1987 after a great 30-year career. Frank then went to work with Carewest for many years, where he enjoyed driving the bus to take Colonel Belcher residents to outings. Through this he forged many friendships with Colonel Belcher residents and staff. He made daily trips to visit residents and assist them however he could. He continued his relationship with the Colonel Belcher for several years after his work with them ended. He volunteered his time and continued his friendship with many of the residents and staff of the Colonel Belcher.

Hockey, and baseball was a large part of his young life. He played Junior hockey with the Medicine Hat Tigers, and the Lethbridge Native Sons. Sports continued to be a part of his life for many years, as he continued to play hockey, and baseball, and when his playing years faded, he coached hockey, and baseball. He volunteered many years as an Umpire for youth baseball. A highlight of his umpire career was working the Little League World Series in Williamsport PA.

Frank and Jean, with their young family, moved to North Haven in 1965. Frank devoted many hours to the community, maintaining the Community Hall, clearing, and flooding the hockey rink. They lived in North Haven until 2015, when they moved to the Renaissance at North Hill.

Frank was always kind and giving. He was a pleasure to be around. When his mobility became restricted, he developed some great friendships with people in the North Hill Centre community. He took great joy in his morning coffee sessions with the new friendships he developed.

Frank was predeceased by Jean, his wife of 68 years, who passed away in 2020. Frank is survived by his daughter Brenda (Bob) of Airdrie, AB, and his sons Larry (Margaret) of Osoyoos, BC, Gerald, Bradley (Brenda), and Jeffrey of Calgary, AB; Frank is also survived by his brother Arthur (Kay) of Norfolk, VA, and eight loving grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Frank’s life will be held at the North Haven Community Centre (5005 North Haven Drive NW, Calgary) on Sunday, June 4, 2023. Friends and family are welcome to drop by between 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. for a casual gathering to remember the life of an awesome person.
