Bob Knight

Obituary of Bob Knight

August 18, 1959 – May 16, 2023

Robert Knight, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at the age of 63 years.

Robert Gerald Knight, aka Bob, Bobby, Knight, King, K-Bob, and Boots, was born on August 18, 1959, to Gerald and Eileen Knight in Saskatoon, SK. He was the third son in a family of four boys: Jim, Bill, Bob, and Ross Knight. Bob grew up in St. Walburg, Saskatchewan with one year spent with his aunt Vi, a life-long influence, in Renton, Washington.

While Bob shared his family’s passion for horses and chuckwagon racing, he was even more drawn to numbers. After attending the University of Saskatchewan, he pursued a career as a Chartered Accountant. As many people can attest, dinners with Bob often turned into impromptu mental math challenges and discussions were filled with thought-provoking questions about world affairs.

In 1989, Bob married the love of his life, Karen, at the Palliser Hotel. The Justice of the Peace ceremony was witnessed by a close friend and the shoeshine guy who Bob recruited when he realized that two witnesses were required. He then maintained Karen’s bicycle on trips all over Canada and Europe, pitched tents, dug snow shelters, canoed, hiked, learned to skate backwards, and every day woke her up with his joy for life.

With the birth of Bob’s favourite person, his son Mitchell, in 1992, his activities only increased. He coached basketball, volunteered on school field trips, fell asleep while reading night-time stories, ran the Terry Fox run, had adventurous father/son canoe trips, and learned there was love even deeper than he had for his wife.

Though Bob faced challenges in his life, he confronted them with unwavering positivity and an indomitable spirit. Within a year of Mitchell's birth, he became ill and was eventually diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and given a 1-to-3-year life expectancy. Throughout years of medical treatments, he remained firmly positive. He shared his friendly, loud, and ‘slightly’ competitive personality everywhere he went, in medical settings, at work, baseball, hockey, volleyball, golf, and dancing.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, Gerald and Eileen Knight, and his brother Jim Knight. He is survived by his wife, Karen, his chip off the old block, Mitchell, his loved daughter-in-law, Brenna, his brothers, Bill and Ross (Gail), his cherished nieces and nephews, extended family, and his loyal canine sidekick, Bean.

In honoring Bob's memory, his family encourages acts of kindness but mostly wants you to remember to get out there to have fun with your family and friends. Bob's enduring legacy of positivity, compassion, and unwavering determination will forever inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.
